Could be that Sony will shed other ventures and focus more on PlayStation, so this may even be a good thing in the long-term. But this will have an impact on PlayStation, one way or another:
PlayStation division under review as part of corporate changes
Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that the PlayStation division is currently involved in the review affecting the wider Sony business
Sony announced this morning that it will axe 8000 jobs and reduce investment in manufacturing, although SCE would not detail whether those cuts will have a direct affect on the PlayStation group.
"In order to stay competitive in the accelerating global network environment, we will always carefully review and make structural changes, if necessary, in order to further expand and strengthen the PlayStation business around the world," said Sony Computer Entertainment in a statement.
Sony said today that its electronics division has been affected by the current economic downturn, and it plans to downsize or withdraw from "unprofitable or non-core businesses."
However, some believe the announced measures won't be enough to help the company, with one analyst stating that Sony needs to prove which parts of the company are going to achieve profits in the future, rather than reduce headcount.
"The number sounds big, but this staff reduction won't be enough," said Katsuhiko Mori, fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments, to the BBC.
"Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company." SourceDarkRedRain (XBL, PSN, WiiU) -

Vista kind of killed itself. When your flagship OS has been out for two years and Dell is still shipping with XP, you know you screwed the pooch. Plus, even MS is rushing to get Windows 7 out the door in '09 to combat the swarm of negativity around Vista.
But seriously, you will see Microsoft start killing off dead-end projects like a lot of the Windows Live services. -

someone also posted this in regular smackdown.
you had to know this would be a popular article.

at this point maybe a "2008 recession/business really sucks" sticky would be in order.
everyone could just post all the shitty business news from all the different companies there.

Who buys CDs anymore? I might buy 1-2 a year with one of them being a gift. Even big budget film profits are down, If not for The Dark Knight 2008 would of been another year of ticket sale drops.Yet the video game business is the biggest profit wise on the planet!
Some of the Music/CD or even Film departments will get slashed first. The PS3 is not the next Dreamcast, if anyone thinks that you truly are dreaming...

This isn't the end of the PS3. As hdinred mentioned, it's more likely they will sell off or liqidate other areas of their company and put the money into the Playstation family. Video games are a growing and profitable business.
Sony may be pompus at times, but they aren't stupid. Everything will be fine.

Full disclosure, I'm not a financial analyst but I'm wondering how this affects their so-called "10-year plan" for the PS3 and if it may cause delays for PS4 development?
This would also hold true for MS I assume. -

all major companies have laid off, closed off business units, or just used hostile takeovers to liquidate employees, especially microsoft. how many game studios have they killed again?
i highly doubt laying off 5%~10% of their workforce will be the end of the PS3.
certainly hope nobody finds guilty pleasure in people losing their jobs.
