Default SE: rising tensions?

Since FFXIII's multiplatform announcement, various comments made by FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase and FFvXIII director Tetsuya Nomura have hinted at rising tensions between key SquareEnix staff and their company president Yoichi Wada. In this Famitsu article where game developers review other company's games, Kitase-san takes a slightly less subtle jab at his boss Wada-san in a review of PSN game Last Guy.

Kitase states (translated from Japanese):
"I'd love for them to add a stage map more close to the SquareEnix office. In The Last Guy, there's a feature where if you save the hidden "VIP" citizens you get more points. So gamers could get fired up if there was a mission "Save the VIP President WD![Wada]"... to save this man in our company who is getting criticized. But it might be even more interesting if people were like "I hate this high class VIP Mr.*blank* so I'm going to just watch him die!" (laughter) Could they put that in the game as a 300 yen add on?"

I can't talk about Kitase really but Nomura is an outspoken Sony fanboy. ie) Why at least for now Versus is PS3 only.

Wow there is some major smackdown at the end of his statement too in his example of last guy, and people just not giving a shit to save his boss if his boss were a VIP.

Sounds like there is some tension there. I wonder if going multi-console raised issues as I'm sure it dumped a ton of work on the team - especially with all the nonsense they have to do now like 2 different release dates, ports, localizations etc

It's a great game. I suspect many of those still saying that PS3 has nothing that interests them, have not even heard of it.

Res 4 never made me jump or squeal like Dead Space's first hour did. Nothing has to be honest.

But I didn't really dig Res 4's obvious inspirations from Lovecraft's Cthulhu universe. Great game, but I'm enjoying Dead Space a lot more so far.

Starting a project knowing it will be for one console that you've probably spent an immense amount of time on to learn and getting very far in the project. THEN having it come down from above that you will be having to ramp up production b/c there will need to be another game also built. I can't imagine Nomura going along w/ something like this.

That's great to hear. I have been looking forward to Dead Space for a long time. Resident Evil 4 was a fantastic game, but to be honest Dead Space's premise seems more appealing to me.

Best sound I have ever heard in a game, without a doubt. Really great game so far even though I am only on chapter 2.

I think we will get a reminder that we are off topic though.

Cool. Survival horror games live or die by the quality of their sound design. Which console are you playing it on BTW?

I guess you're right, though, we probably better get back on topic.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to hear about Nomura and Wada having clashing opinions.

Nomura is very much a hardcore Sony loyalist from the FF7 days, I think it's mainly his influence within Enix that has kept Vs. as a PS3 exclusive.

As for Kitase, he does seem like the type that would rather work on Sony hardware given that he's been there since the PS1 days as well, not to mention this guy has now been forced to work on hardware that he has virtually ZERO knowledge of.

Imagine spending the last 2-3 years of your time trying to get your head around a piece of hardware to make your game work for and now, 3-4 months back your boss says "Yeah, now you gotta make THAT work on THIS... oh and you've got about a year to do it all, kthanxbye!".

RE 4 wasn't a "jump scare" type of game. RE series sort of abandoned the scares awhile ago, and started focusing on "action". It was more "tension" from the idea that all these people are coming after you. The scenes in the house, and town were great set pieces for tension. Brilliant actually.

I'm getting Dead Space *knock on wood* tomorrow. I'll pop it in over the weekend, and I'm looking forward to it. It should be a nice "hold me over" till RE 5.

My friend compares it more to Doom 3. Only in the idea of "jump scares". Doom 3 was really good at making you jump. The sound design was rather good, and the lighting hid the enemies...and they always had a tendency to "pop out at you". It got old, but the first few hours were great.

I'm curious how it compares to Condemned in all honesty. That to me is the "Next Gen King of Horror Titles", so far.
