I agree that BD is not a long term advantage for the PS3, but I highly doubt that Sony thought it would be. Sooner or later, BD players will cost less than a PS3 (you can get a DVD player for cheaper than a PS2) and that is to be expected.\
BD works as a short term advantage for the PS3 and in time games and price become the long term outlook. The more games, the lower the price, the more sales you will get.I own a 360 and a PS3. I play my 360 more but think Uncharted is the best game of this generation so far. -

Rofl, the following comments light this entire thread on fire, along with its motives. I love when threads are created out of sheer fanboyism, and they flop like this.
I'd love for MS to try to do a digital box only next gen. 360 fans whine that PS3 owners have to wait 5 minutes for installs. Now, when the "720" is here within a couple years, you think people are going to be excited to download GTA 6 and wait 6-7 hours on launch day? By all means, enjoy.
Rofl, top notch as usual.
It's funny that we're talking about "not a long-term advantage for PS3", and our evidence is that consoles in the future will have DD while PS3 wont. How is that even an argument against the PS3? OH NOES, Xbox 5 has DD, and the PS3 from 8 years ago only has blu-ray! Disadvantages!!!Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword
Back Burner: LBP2, LA Noire
Just finished: Anno 2070 (PC)
Home Theater: Panasonic PT-ae4000u, 110" Carada Brilliant White Screen, PS3
Gaming PC: I5 2500k, GTX 670, 8GB Gskill 1600 RAM, 64 GB Patriot SSD, Samsung BD Drive -

All of this is true.
But I have doubts that any of this is actually a serious negative against traditional disc-based media over digital distribution. As others have mentioned, with online bandwidth caps and the fact that a lot of people either don't have hard drives or have small ones, we start running into the "mandatory install" argument that makes the PS3 hard drive such a negative, instead of being an enhancement. Unfortunately with digital distribution, ALL media is a "mandatory install" since you can no longer simply play it off the disc and HAVE TO install it on hard drive or other storage system to view it, meaning that people with more limited storage means are once again being forced to carefully pick and choose, or play the deletion game, in order to ensure they have enough room for all this stuff. If bandwidth caps become more widespread in the USA, that's just another limiting factor on top of that.
I don't think this generation digital distribution is ready. People just aren't taking the storage requirements seriously enough yet. -

Downloading/storing data will become less and less necessary.
The 'cloud' is where the majority of data will live... and provided there's a fast enough connection, the device streaming the content doesn't need any storage at all.
When I stream the tens of thousands of peices of content from Netflix, I'm not downloading them - I'm streaming them.
100mbps speeds (which is well over twice the mbps Blu-ray is capable of outputting) are already possible in our country, and analysts predict such speeds to only become more widespread.
It's also less about flat out replacing, and more about co-existing. I have no doubt Blu-ray will maintain decent sales through the years, but it's got A LOT of competition... standard DVD's aren't looking to slow down much any time soon, and digital streaming is progressing more and more. Nearly every TV show these days can be watched online. The majority of watching time our cable box gets is via on-demand content.
His comments aren't far fetched, or way off at all. He's right on the money.
Blu-ray's just not a very big plus, long term... and even in the short term, if stand alone BD players drop to around $199 anytime soon - PS3's will look even more overpriced/unecessary. -
