Default Sony: "We like to provide as many services as possible for free"

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...sible-for-free

Quote:
The president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is keen to provide as many services to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable users as possible - and is happy to look at business partnerships and new revenue models in order to do so.

Speaking in an interview at Games Convention in Leipzig, following the Sony press conference in which the free music video streaming from VidZone was announced, Yoshida-san explained that it wasn't possible for Sony to address every aspect of a user's needs itself.

"We're more open about approaching and bringing services in to PS3 and PSP," he explained. "We can't support all the needs of the consumer and there are great companies providing services on the PC already - so we're very open to provide the opportunity to those companies to reach our user base as well."

And when pressed on the importance of the VidZone deal as being free to consumers, he revealed that Sony has been looking at the Internet as a good example of alternative funding methods.

"We like to provide as many services as possible for free - we already provide our network access for gameplay for free - and the interesting thing about the network side and the Internet business is that there's a variety of revenue sources," he said. "Not necessarily getting people to pay, but with advertising and so on.

"Those are things we're looking at, and learning how we can provide a service without people having to pay - but we still get our operation running with funding from somewhere so that we can maintain the level of quality we want."

PlayStation 3 users will be able to access the free music video streaming service from Q1 2009, with the added bonus of creating playlists and porting them to the PSP.

The full GamesIndustry.bizinterview with Shuhei Yoshida, in which he also talks about the reasons behind his move back to Japan and the impact of titles like LittleBigPlanet and EyePet, is available now.
So don't expect to be paying anything for online multiplayer or where possible other PSN services coming from the house of Sony anytime soon.

XBOX Live: You failz.

Ummm what's this music video service like? Can I get music video's from people like Crystal Kay in HD or is it all from American's? I would prefer Crystal Kay's stuff over popular American stuff as well as m-Flo.

There's a simple way to see if this is true. Are they saying that online multiplayer is free on the Sony platform? Yes. Can I play online multiplayer for free? Yes. Are they releasing services for free on the platform? Yes. Are those services free? Yes.

Errr how is that being gullible?

I love the way gullible 360 fanboys continue to pay $250-$300 for a service that everyone else gets for free and are happy to do so. That's gullible.

Just wait. Sony will do all this stuff...someday...just wait and you will enjoy all the features that M$ offers right now. Stop being so gullible and paying $45 dollars a year on something you can get for free...some day....Hey if your willing to wait even longer I am sure the PS3 will drop to $199 by 2012.

Where's your free music video streaming service or your DVR or your web browsing services?

You keep paying for your online multiplayer (because that's all you are paying for) and your Rich Presence™. I'll keep my nice free full functional service. There's a good sheep.

I agree, if you can't afford $3.90 a month for all the stuff you can get for free, then you should find another hobby.

Or $250-$300 extra in total and I'd still think $0 a month is better than $3.90 a month. More power to you if you think paying for something everyone else gets for free is a good idea. It's great that you feel that way, no really it is. Honest.

Only on Hi-Def Digest does free=bad.

(oh can't you learn to quote properly?)

Well these responses you get when you blatently are asking to be flamed when you stick xbox failz at the end.

Was that needed?? nope.

Was it really to hard for you to just post the news without trying to start the same bickering we see all the time??

I have a 360 and PS3 and both online newtworks are fine for what they are and what they offer.

If sony can truely do there online service for free for the next 10 years then great more power to them.

But i am more than willing to pay a very small amount for live cause i feel it is worth it regardless of what any other company is doing.

If you are going to post news then post it in an impartial manner rather than the fanboyish way this has been.

You heartless monster! How can you spend that $3.90 a month on Xbox live! I saw Sally Struthers on TV and she said for $3.90 a month you could feed 75 children in some loser country. Sell your Xbox and stick with the PS3 and give the $3.90 for this cause. Do it for Sally and the children.

You're in a smackdown forum, if you don't understand how that works that's your problem and I'm not bothered by the responses people post. Frankly I come here to bask in the glow of fanboy inspired arguments extreme blinkered views, lack of logic and have a bloody good argument. Impartiality isn't welcome here and you are expected to take a stance on one system over the over, even if it's just a small bias.

I own both systems and the PS3 is by far the best system on the market. Eat it!

If this section isn't for you perhaps the gamesroom is?

Yeah cause Free=Bad doesn't it?

360 Fanboy: Hello MS? Can I give you an extra $300 to use my console please? Yeah, yeah I know it'll probably RRoD on me but I really love paying for stuff that's free everywhere else. Thanks.
