Default Why the PS3 still kinda sucks

So it's a bit harsh title, but anyways.... why can't they update the damn thing to include upscaling??? The problem is not with my a/v setup but I recently convined my cousin to go the PS3 route instead of 360(mainly since he likes MLB, and The Show is really fun). He calls me after setting it up asking why supposed to be awesome new system is displaying his games only in 480. Come to find out that the games he's trying to play are mostly EA titles that only support 720P and his TV only has 1080i support. I have to explain to him that the system I told him to buy won't perform a simple feature like upscaling. Partially it is my fault for not recognizing his TV only does 1080i(57 inch Sony).

I never gave much attention to the issue before unti lnow, I know it's old news but you don't really see the issue until it affects you or someone you know.

Most games nowadays support 1080i upscaled, regardless of the box header.

They can't update it to include upscaling, because to do so requires improved hardware.

PS3's 'scaling' chip is very rudimentary. It cannot scale video on both the y and x axis - it can only scale vertically.

This is a stark contrast to Xbox 360's video scaler, which was specifically build to handle scaling of any supported HDTV standard resolution, and scale to any other HDTV standard supported resolution (and then some).

Sony won't fix this anytime soon, if at all.

You mean the PS3 won't just output the game at whatever res you configure? That kind of sucks.

This falls under the games smackdown or? I think there are probably plenty of other places that this topic would fit more appropriately. However, in the end, yes its his tv's fault and the fault of the PS3 scaler chip.

Games smackdown, since Sony in their infintie wisdom decided not to update the PS3 in all of it's revisions to include a scaler. I still think they could patch it software wise. With an entire SPE secluded for the OS, there has to be a way for them to do this software right?

Too bad for 1080i TV owners, what you can do is buy an HDMI receiver that will convert 1080i to 1080p, and you can also enjoy the lossless sound to boot.
1080i is a NA idiosyncracy, like gas guzzling cars and trucks(thankfully dying), 110V power, and crap NTSC standard.

1080i is a hold over from CRT HDTV's, actually some of these displays are quite impressive.

720p & 1080i are also the only two recognized high-definition broadcast standards.

Games can have 1080i support patched in. Burnout Paradise being an example. However, the actual display chip can't be updated. Regardless, I totally agree with you. The PS3's horizontal scalier is shit. Totally not user friendly, just set one resolution and let it scale. Works just fine for the 360(unless your name is WellInformed). Why wouldn't it work for the PS3?

Oh here we go with the magical SPEs. Please... they have nothing to do with how the video is displayed.

Didn't say they did. Was just thinking that if for some reason a software patching method would not work due to the need of extra processing power for some reason the leftover power not utilized by the OS could be pulled. I was not aware burnout was patched for the 1080i support.

I have NEVER said anything about spes being "magical", .
