So he can return that as well? And get someone else's abused unit back instead of his money?

+1 good one. This is a great point. Say what you want about the PS3 (as a game system) BUT it is the best Blu-ray player and upconversion unit out there!

Word is the scaler in RSX is broken and can only scale horizontally. If thats true the 65nm RSX that should show up eventually would probably fix this. The Burnout situation is a newer firmware free'd up enough memory to do 960x1080.

thats one hell of a point. I purchased a $400 bluray player...that allows online movie rentals, has an awesome slideshow, and has free game demo's.
All of those features alone are worth the dough.

Although you still lack the ability to bitstream audio I bet Sony is working on that as we speak if they monitor forums. (which I am positive they do)

Tell your friend to stop beliving that he has a HDTV. He does not.

For something to get the HD Ready logo, it has to support 1080i AND 720p

Anything that does not meet this bare minimum requirement is not a HDTV. The fact your mate got conned into buying this junk, is not really Sony's fault.

As for the quality of the scaler, there are some right jokers here. The quality of the PS3's scaler is a far far better than the scaler in the 360, which looks like total crap quality-wise.

There is no scaler..

You must have forgotten the hardware tear downs and all the bragging about ANA and HANA from back when people proved it was impossible for the PS3 to do any sort of scaling.

Whatever you do don't allow them to see your PS3 playing PS2 software in full screen mode.. Thats just "stretching" it only scaling if it has the Toshiba SUC stamp of approval.
