Default Software emulation most likely coming to current PS3s

Translated from the Deutsch:

Quote:
Reeves said the new backward compatibility will emulate PS2 SingStar accurately. It would use a software emulation to be introduced in a future firmware. This will allow PS2 SingStar to run directly on the PS3. You will not need the PS3 version of SingStar for this to work. "We'll follow which titles are worthwhile and get them up and running via emulation." This is, however, a very complex technical challenge as the current PS3 lacks the necessary chips to run PS2 code natively.

Looks like it's coming, but will be a long, painful process as was the case with the Xbox emulation on the 360. If this is the case, expect to see PS2 titles on the PSN store soon.

Yea, I never thought they'd kill off BC entirely but I dislike this method.

Well, that certainly is good news if it turns out to be true. I still think the ideal situation would be to have one model that features full hardware BC and one that features BC through emulation. But oh well, at least there are still PS3s you can get that offer good BC, you have no such option with the 360--the BC on the 360 sucks. Over half my Xbox games won't play on my 360 (Otogi 1&2, Chronicles of Riddick, Tenchu, etc.), and so I had to keep my bulky original Xbox around. My 80GB PS3 has played every PS2 game I have thrown at it, so I am quite satisfied with it. If you are worried about it though, you can always go find a 60GB off Ebay.

I'm thinking there might be an announcement for PS2 emulation at TGS. Let's see if me crystal ball is working. I just got it out of the shop.

BC on my 60 gig PS3 is masterful. Best BC of any system I have ever used. PS1 + PS2 in 1080i = the sweetness.

i knew this would happen eventually. You can quote me on posts from last year saying that. Sony is scared to do it too soon becuse of PS2's still reasonable sales.

Why scared? Universal BC would be a good thing, it would help encourage PS2 owners to get PS3 while retaining their existing PS2 libraries.

No. The hardware upscales it beyond 480p, its beautiful, it can do 720p or 1080i. It was one of the last 60 gig specific features they sent out an upgrade for. It actually fully upscales the game using the hardware (not emulation). IMO its worth the extra 200 bucks just for it. Its like the ultimate Playstation. Try to find a 60 gigger if your life depended on it!! These babies are going to be worth alot someday...since it was the prominent model that they used when the system was unpopular...lol.

Well, maybe Reeves really is talking about software emulation of PS2 titles. But it seems more likely he's talking about the PS3/PS2 disc swap compatibility for Singstar. With a PS3 version of Singstar you'll be able to disc swap to a PS2 version and play those songs:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/...compatibility/

This isn't so much emulation of a PS2 title as it is PS3 Singstar being able to read the game data from older versions of itself.

Probably gonna sell my 60GB, and buy a 80GB, as it turns out it's got the 65nm RSX in there too now (65nm Cell and 65nm RSX!!). Power consumption is down to 111w (from 135w, from 180w). Makes the 175w 360 seem like a gas guzzler (no wonder the Americans love it).

What? It's still just an upscaler, like the one your receiver or even TV might have. It doesn't magically turn PS2 games into HD.

You're overstating its effect.

The best thing it does is the smoothing feature.

No, I'm not overstating its effect. It looks alot better than software emulation and about 5x better than if you tried to run the software off of a PS2. Think about the fact thats its also going through an HDMI cable and you have once again a superior video transfer. Is it true full HD, not exactly, but on some very high fidelity game such as FFXII, the graphics are beautiful. Trust me its an enormous improvement over what my PS2 was ever able to output on my Plasma TV. Enormous.

The quote from Reeves was pretty specifically talking about emulation. There's a chance the article is wrong, but the translation is nearly word for word.
