There are a lot of things that Alone in the Dark does very well. Building yourself a Molotov cocktail and subsequently taping a box of ammunition to it is not without its charm. Throwing said contraption onto a hapless zombie? Well that's just awesome. Unfortunately, other much more simple things, like camera controls, driving and combat can be a chore. Thankfully, it looks like developer Eden games if fixing many of these issues in the PS3 version. Even better, an upcoming patch should implement many of the improvements into the Xbox 360 version.

For example, Edward Carnby, the game's protagonist, now runs by default (rather than when the A button is held). Walking is accomplished by gently pushing the analog stick (what a revolutionary idea). Many other changes, including a better -- and manually controlled -- camera and improved driving controls, improve the game substantially according to Eurogamer. Exactly which PS3 improvements will make it into the 360 version remains unclear, but we'll happily take anything that can improve Alone in the Dark's more annoying aspects.

We'll see if it fixes it. Hopefully so, the game looked like it had potential, just some serious flaws killed it.

If the rumors are true that the PS3 version will be a budget title at $30, then I'm sold on this.

I had not heard that...that's certainly interesting. I know, even with these changes, I wasn't keen on buying this at $60.

Keep in mind, it's only rumor at this point, but here's the link and quote:

The long-delayed PS3 version of Alone in the Dark looks to be coming with enhancements ... and a price cut? A Gamestop listing shows Atari's survival horror game with a very nice price of $30. Of course, considering the overwhelmingly negative critical reviews it received when it debuted on Xbox 360, a lower price may still not justify a purchase. It's up to Atari to prove whether or not the added development time given to the PS3 build will make it a better product.

It's atari, they won't fix all of anything.

Shame too, Alone in the Dark on the 3DO was one of the first video games to actually give me a "jump out of your seat" moment. The atmosphere was chilling for the time, imo. Still going to rent this new one, for nostalgia sake.

They might fix it. It's only a theory of mine, but the PS3 version getting fixed... well, Phil Harrison DID join Atari not too long ago...

While that's true, the guy isn't a superhuman. These still are the same people who made the crappy game in the first place, and they only have a few months. I'm hopeful, but I'm not holding my breath.

Agreed, they can't work miracles, but from what I've read, most of the fixes seem to be not too drastic; adding checkpoints to the driving sequences, repositioning the camera, that kind of thing. Changing the physics system of driving is pretty major, so I'm not sure about that one, but the rest of them sounded like fairly reasonable tweaks that wouldn't demand gigantic rewriting of code to implement.

The main issue was it being shit.

But... PS3 makes games bad because of Blu-ray! (/Darkfalz)
