Even your own screenshots prove it. Uncharted tops Gears by a large margin.

what about the other important aspects of graphics like animations and lighting?

in some of those hand picked screenshots, gears looks better, and in other, uncharted looks better.

overall uncharted > gears, especially when considering the launch dates but going with they both look good.

Uncharted had better visuals, GoW had better art direction.

That top shot is kind of sketchy though. I think a lot of these screenshots may be prerelease and not representing the final product.

The cropped screenshots take something away from the games too. The Uncharted shots also look weird, I don't recall the game having such a washed out appearance. Having played through both, I feel comfortable stating that Uncharted looks better (and it should, it's a more recent game), but nothing in Uncharted can top the Lancer.

I had to go with they both look very good... Gears is clearly superior with character models, though it feels like it's a little weaker when displaying large open area's... Though there's the caveot here that it seems like Gears was not consistantly always on the left so I'm assuming I made all the correct assuptions about which is which.

Isn't this whole debate akin to asking which is better: 94/100 or 95/100? Yes, the 95 might be better, but who cares? They're both up pretty high in score.

All I can say to everybody is this: actually spend some time playing both games before making up your minds. The things that make Uncharted look better (principally real-time lighting) don't reveal themselves very well in screen shots. I own and have beaten both games, so I have had ample time to compare them.

As far as screenshots go though, the comparison is pretty fair. The top one is the only one I would take issue with, since there are lots of better examples of textures than that in Uncharted. They took one of the better textures from Gears of War and compared it to one of the lesser textures found in Uncharted.

I'd go with Uncharted, although gears probably does have better player models i think Uncharted takes it with it's amazing lighting and luscious environments

It's not so much the player models per se as it is the art style on them (to over simplify). Gears has characters with detailed, complicated armor textures, and Drake wears jeans and a white T-shirt hehe.

Uncharted is a game that looks absolutely beautiful in motion, it's animation in particular totally destroys Gears.

Seriously, when I got my HDTV, Gears was the game I showed off for awhile for it's graphics etc...then when I got Uncharted, it took over that job in a heartbeat.

Cmon Soy... err animal take off your Sony goggles for a second. Both look fantastic. Maybe its the art style that you dont like. Drakes look better (by a hair) in some of those screens and gears does the same in the others.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I really appreciate the amount of work Epic put into the visuals of Gears of War, but I wasn't a big fan of the art direction. For me Uncharted almost wins by default simply because it's NOT another war torn, grey, crumbling environment featuring gritty, armored marine types with a variety of weapons. It was a real breath of fresh air to find a game that had some vibrant colors in it instead of the greys and browns that dominate a lot of art direction in games today, even MGS 4 fell prey to this from time to time.

Then again, for me, art direction is far more important than actual technical accomplishment. I still think Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most beautiful games to grace the PS2 despite it not having the same technical achievement as God of War 2.

Yeah, I find it interesting that several people said that they thought Gears of War had better character models. I guess certain people really go for that etched, shiny, metalic look.
But to me, having played both games extensively, I would have to say that I think Uncharted's character models are more detailed. But it's the kind of detail that doesn't stand out and catch the eye in a screenshot, it's a little more subtle, not like the shiny segmented armor of Gears of War. That is a design that is easy to stand out, whereas Uncharted's characters are modeling cloth and skin. Uncharted's characters are in fact comprised of significantly more polygons than Gears of War's characters.

In my opinion the armor looks pretty damn good in Gears of War, but the hair and skin doesn't look very convincing to me. It has that same rough, grainy look as most of the rest of the game. And the character's necks seem to meld right into the metal of the armor.

But yeah, I agree about Uncharted looking better in motion. The animation, while not perfect, is better than in Gears of War. The lighting too, is something that cannot be properly conveyed by a screen shot. When you see dynamic shadows and patches of light shifting over the landscape as the wind blows softly through the trees, it's about then that you realize this game looks quite a bit better than Gears of War.
