Default Heavy Rain devs explains PS3 exclusivity

Pretty much just an article previewing the game but the last page caught my eye as a worthy smackdown topic.

Quote:
After the demo wrapped, Cage took some questions, but mostly dished out vague answers. Madison's options, Cage said, could have included fighting back and killing the taxidermist, hiding out and waiting for the killer to leave, then escaping, or even failing and becoming another victim. The twist, he said, was that that the story will continue, even if your character dies. We wanted to know whether the control shifts to someone else should that happen, and Cage merely said, "it works." Someone else wanted to know if resetting the game would prevent a major act from happening. Cage confirmed that you can do so, but somehow, manipulation of gameplay will carry some cost. He closed by saying that one of Quantic Dream's rationales for creating the title as a PS3 exclusive was borne from the need to create a product that's undiluted by the need to simultaneously produce it for multiple platforms.

It would be one thing to marvel about Heavy Rain's exceptionally detailed visuals, which we did when we saw "The Casting." It's quite another to see what Quantic Dream is doing with narrative and storytelling. We've got some concerns about how the unconventional controls will function and feel, but for now, we're suspending disbelief. This 45-minute demo effectively demonstrated the exciting ideas behind what could be one of the heaviest hitters of 2009 (or beyond).

That's understandable... it's easier to make a game better when you can put all your assets on one platform, and you don't need to think about port-ability.

...too bad they chose the inferior platform... it would have been nice to see what they could have done with 360's more powerful GPU, more available ram, and better dev environment...

Smackdown...

Is that why the best looking games of this gen are PS3 exclusives like Uncharted, MGS4 and GT5P?

You have a higher fail rate than the 360...

The GPU comment is debatable, each platform can have an edge on each other in different ways, but when it comes down to it the PS3 has the total edge. Different development teams have made different contradictive claims about each sysmtes GPU, more than likely the 360 is MORE INTELLIGENTLY DESIGNED for easy development, but the PS3 has more actual raw power, which has been demonstrated by MGS4 for example. 360 has more available RAM but it is slower than the PS3's which is about four times as fast, which ultimately is more powerful, regardless of the extra 256 MB the 360 CAN use. Sure the flexibility of combined system/graphics RAM can be helpful in some situation, but in terms of actual processing efficiency, the PS3 is a bit ahead of the curve. They obviously chose the PS3 because it is capable of higher visual fidelity.

I could already tell that we were in for a ride. As the game booted up, Cage commented casually that Heavy Rain will never have to load. Once you've begun, you play through the entire game without a single loading segment.
