Xbox 360 Gets Redesigned d-pad

Controller looks the same. The d-pad is apparently just redesigned to fix the known issues/complaints.

UK, August 20, 2008 - A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on.

Hmm, prayers do get answered. My enjoyment of fighting games has just increased by 1000. Hope they release it before SFII Turbo: HD.

This is nice. Might help make Bionic Commando: Rearmed a little less frustrating.

If you take the controller apart and run sand paper around inside the lip/ridge it makes the rocker area bigger and fixes the problem too. Plus its free.

I wonder if Xbots are going to complain about this the same way they did about Sony "forcing" people to re-buy controllers with rumble that should have been there at launch.

Seems SDF has already started. MS never denied this was an issue. Sony said "Rumble is last gen" and "Not possible with sixaxis". That's where the haha's and the finger pointing began.

Either way, it's a moot point. Not coming here and it's a limited supply deal:

However, the new pad is "a limited edition promotional item that is only available in Europe, Asia and Latin America while supplies last", which is likely to upset fans who feel the d-pad needs full-time replacement rather than a one-off patch for PES.

Conveniently you forgot this little blip:

Speaking to Eurogamer at Games Convention, one third-party publisher told us that the pad was also designed to work with Street Fighter IV, so perhaps it will turn up again next year.

haha, that's funny. I actually stuck to my PS2 for WE Soccer instead of buying it on the 360 after having downloading the demo because the dpad on my 360 controller just made the gameplay suck so much ass. Better super late than never.. or are they really not bringing this to the U.S. permantly

That doesn't make any sense at all. Why would they make the effort to re-design and produce a new controller if there was no intention to manufacture it in full production?

If this controller was designed and produced through Microsoft's efforts (not just a game developer who wants his game to be played well at Leipzig), then I have no doubt it will replace the current controller.

Seems a bit short-sighted to start with the controller, when there are far more pressing needs to be addressed.
