Default 80GB PlayStation 3 arrives early at Best Buy, Friday in Europe

http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/19/8...day-in-europe/

Quote:
Lookie, lookie, an 80GB PS3 snapped up for $399 from a local Best Buy. Although not officially due until September, reports are trickling in from around these United States of Gaming of an early release. Not too much of a surprise, we guess, what with European retailers all showing a Friday retail launch.

This puts Sony in a nice position to take advantage of the possible demand during and after their presentations at the Leipzig Games Convention. I think the Sept. NPD numbers will be interesting. To bad we don't have worldwide numbers to look to monitor.

It depends on what Sony does with Leipzig. If they just use it to show more demonstrations of LBP, then I don't think it's going to drive any substantial new demand. They need to do something different than they did at E3.

Unless this is a tricky marketing tactic to try and make it seem like the old 80gb ps3 got price cut to $399, I don't really understand.

I mean, I imagine alot of uninformed people will see a big 80gb PS3-now $399 sign and think it is on sale and snatch it up without realizing the difference.

Other than that it seems like a "coup d'MEH" rather than a "coup d'etat"

Edit: And on further thought, I think this could garner them some negative reactions from people who buy without understanding the difference between the SKUS. It would be like going to a car dealership and buying a V6 Mustang thinking you are getting a V8 Mustang GT at a sweet price point, only to discover you've got less features than you thought.

I agree it basically has pissed my sister in law off who has been saving pennies to get a PS3. Now her son who has a ton of PS2 titles can only buy a used PS3 when she get's the funds to buy a PS3 so he can play his old titles.

It's almost to the point where she is going to take his PS2 games trade them in and buy a 360 and start over.

I can only imagine that there will be SOMETHING available that has backwards compatibility.
And I'd say if he's willing to trade in his PS2 games for a 360, being able to play them with backwards compatibility is not a high priority. I'm sure alot of people use the BC capabilities of the PS3, but I would say that on this board especially it's a very very slim demographic. I have the original fully BC 60GB ps3, and have played maybe a total of 3 hours worth of PS2 games. It's a nice feature, and I think PS3 should honor it's roots and always have a BC system, but I don't think it's a dealbreaker.

What happened to his PS2?

I don't like that they took out BC but my PS2 still works fine. What was he planning trading in his PS2 for $30 store credit?

I agree w/ this post, I think Sony will eventually offer either a buyable or free download for BC.

My guess is that by the Holidays the full software BC update will be out.

The only thing I play on my Ps3 is Ps2 games. I think I have logged 99% of my Ps3 hours on either Ps2 games or Blu-Ray movies.

Playing almost the entire PS1 library is more than "zero BC." However, lacking PS2 compatibility is a sad occurrence.

They have BC, these models do not. Sony is going w/ only 1 SKU from this point on. No more 40gig, no more MGS4 bundles (when they're all sold out).

Package:
80 gig PS3 w/ no PS2 BC
DS3
