In the wake of July’s NPD figures, we thought we’d look at just how well the ‘big three’ have fared over the last seven months by tallying all hardware data for 2008.

We all know Nintendo is having a fantastic year, but just how well is Wii doing?

Microsoft and Sony are fighting their own high-def battle, but how big is the margin between the two, and who has the lead?

After the drop.

Back in February, “Big” Jack Tretton announced that this was the year of the PS3, and if it wasn’t for Wii he may well have been right.

The Mario machine has certainly lived up to its E3 promise of making people smile, moving 4,038,000 units so far this year.

Wii’s success isn’t the only reason Nintendo’s smiling like a Cheshire cat this year: DS has sold 3,795,400 machines so far in 2008, making Nintendo’s total hardware tally for the US 7,833,400.

By comparison, Sony’s three-pronged attack of PS3, PS2 (no Jan 2008 sales figures are available, oddly) and PSP, has achieved 4,705,000 unit sales in total.

Xbox 360 sales figures have remained steady since January, but have always rested near the 200,000 mark. Total 360 sales for the year come in at a relatively paltry 1,560,800 units.

This figure puts Microsoft’s console firmly at the bottom of the next-gen pile. In fact, if we take every device into consideration, Microsoft’s great green hope has sold just over 400,000 more than PS2, and that’s without January’s figure for the last-gen Sony machine included.

As we’re fast approaching the Christmas period, and with so many big titles from all three consoles - most markedly from Sony and Microsoft - the most pertinent question in the US market is whether or not the Nintendo train can be derailed in any meaningful way.

Sony is pushing LittleBigPlanet hard, with the company wanting Sackboy to become an “emblematic character” for the brand. There’s also the mouth-watering Resistance 2 and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift to look forward to in the last quarter of this year.

Microsoft is betting heavily this autumn on Epic’s Gears of War 2, a Rare duo of Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, and Lionhead’s atmospheric Fable II.

While all the above look fantastic, it remains to be seen if these high profile titles will be preaching to the converted or they’ll have the power to turn onlookers into new customers. Will they encourage the nearly 5 million Wii owners to choose a PS3 or 360 as their second console?

The only ‘AAA’ Wii titles confirmed as hitting US shores before Yuletide are Wii Music, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquillity and Star Wars: Clone Wars Lightsaber Duels. While it looks like an anorexic line-up, Wii Music alone is likely to secure success for the machine this Holiday.

But Christmas is months away. Who’s “winning” in America so far this year?

Its not looking too bad for the 360 considering the PS3 has a lower userbase and that "should" make it a bit more sought after. On the flip side, despite the ps3's higher price, sales are strong!

I've read that some people here think the 360 has peaked but it seems pretty much on par with the ps3. No one can deny Nintendo's crown as number one tho. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I honestly thought the big N were done for after the GameCube!

Solid numbers for PS3 and 360. Been a good year for gaming to begin with, too.

I wonder what the worldwide figures look like, though. Hopefully it shows more of the gap narrowing so we can see more competition and hopefully innovation (and lower entry price for the main models).

Wild card could be Japan this fall. With a solid roll of RPG's hittin this fall on the 360 and 2 by square if the sales boost carries even a few weeks of momentum it could be huge. It'll be very telling if sales go from 24K to 4K next week or will they stay at 20K lets say? Shit even 15K.

If that were to happen with just tales who knows what square titles might bring. Also, will the US price cut reflect anywhere else?

It'll be an interesting fall.

I doubt it. If the PS3 can't stabilize, I don't expect the 360 to fare any better. And while the 360 does have more JRPG's, the PS3 does have just as good of a lineup in general that appeals to Japanese gamers. But it's just not stabilizing. Japan is all over the Wii now. Well actually, the Wii has been doing good but not great lately. It's been all about the PSP and DS.

And there's like a two month gap in between Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant, in which I expect plenty of people to wait for Last Remnant on PS3.

Yeah, I was worried that Nintendo was on its way out after the Gamecube, but this just goes to show you that just because a powerful console maker does poorly one generation does not mean that it is suddenly out of the game. Fortunately all the console makers are doing well this generation. Competition is good.

That said, I personally don't understand the appeal of the Wii. It is no more attractive to me than the Gamecube. But while the Gamecube sold poorly the Wii is selling like hotcakes. Go figure.

That's because you forgot sales growth is what matters, and the PS3 has grown tremendously in sales since last year (I believe it's doubled in sales volume, a 100% increase?) while the Xbox 360 has either remained stagnant or gone down.

Matters to who...fanboys? You can smear bullshit on anything you want, but it doesn't change the fact that sales are competitive between the PS3 and the 360.

Its blindingly obvious that if the current price gap is maintained that the PS3 has the momentum to widen the gap over time.

Luckily MS knows this, hence the impending price drop. Sony will have to work hard to avoid a holiday blow-out, then respond next year with a price drop.

A <300k gap between 360 and PS3 can easily be wiped out in ONE holiday month.

NPD results are nearly irrelevant until Oct-Dec are included.

lolz... Now sales dont matter I guess...

Funny, I can recall countless xbots creaming their pants over a measly 5 - 10k win.

But hey if sales dont matter in smackdown, I guess we will NEVER see you or anyone else here tout a measily 20k difference in software sales, right?

17.7 million Xbox 360s and 8.1 million copies of Halo 3 sold worldwide

I mean, you didnt post that silly nonsense about console sales & software sales, did you?

Sales WERE EVERYTHING to you, of course now that is changed. Notice James says

Check your brain dude. I was talking about double standards, clearly you can see that right? Hypocrisy is a completely different thing. If I was duping accounts, please show me an account I was using, with some kind of recent login date?

Edit - still waiting for that proof of IP's matching, something. I know mods can see my IP so they can certainly validate that, can they not? Please, I welcome it.

Also -I still stand by my original statement, that console sales/domination makes no difference in my enjoyment with whatever system I prefer. I have always said that, and I have never changed my stance.

But to act like sales are the end all be all when it favors your preference, then dismiss it at a whim when it doesnt, is kind of, well.. Figure it out.
