I'm very patient. Unlike a lot of people on these forums, I'd rather have it when it's ready, rather than early and buggy (*coughs*windowsvista, Microsoft, fix your shit).
Besides, it's coming to PS3 stateside, not sure why I'd have to learn Japanese...

I too can wait. I still enjoy the FF series as a mainstay of JRPGs, but that's really more for the spectacle and cut-scenes, with a good story or engaging characters thrown in as a happy bonus. For me JRPGs have been a lot more satisfying--overall--with smaller titles like Suikoden or Shin Megami Tensei because the stories tend to take more chances and be more complex. Also, Suikoden has that addictive 108 character Pokemon thing happening where ya gotta' befriend 'em all.

Yes and no.
FFVII was a good story but seemed to have a lot of holes in it that were only more fully explained with subsequent games that built on the lore. What I like about Suikoden and SMT games is that they're essentially self-contained. But of course, talking about FFVII is going after a fairly sacred cow to a certain generation of gamer. It's still a landmark in the genre, with iconic characters, but the story as a whole for FFVII didn't really "come together" until after all the ancillary material and games fleshed it out. FFXII on the other hand was very, very good and had a plot that was extremely reminiscent of the political intrigue that I enjoy so much in Suikoden titles. However, I think the game ultimately suffered from the original director leaving the project and the game itself being hastily finished in order to ship it out on time. It's not quite as bad as what I experienced in the first Fable, but I did feel that FFXII had a good story going on that was diminished somewhat by the end, where they were trying to wrap things up too quickly, and a lot of the careful character development and political nuance got lost in the rush to bring you to the final boss fight. I love both games, but I think that the smaller games, though suffering from a lack of budget for all the visual fireworks, might be better balanced in a narrative sense. Of course, having a better narrative still doesn't have quite the same wow-factor as the first time you saw a summon at work in FFVII, but that's why we play those games... |

I was just saying the plots in those two games were complicated; that's all.

And you're right. I just wanted to elaborate on what I'd said earlier because after your reply I realized I wasn't being fair to those games, and it sounded a bit dismissive to just say "all non FF games have more complex stories."

I am so not caring for Square games right now. Seriously, I finally got some hands-on time on Crisis Core and all it made me realize is that Square DESPERATELY need to move away from the CG overkill.
People complain about Kojima's use of cinematics, but those feel far more natural to me than anything Square's made in the last decade. I don't care about how shiny fake things are in an RPG any more... all your fucking RPGs sound and look alike now.

I'll wait for the game. I'll be damned if I'll buy this terrible movie just to play a demo.
