http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/ne...pachter/?biz=1

guess MS needs a real price cut to beat the ps3.

I've been around a lot less but aren't those price cuts in September official?

What would you consider PS3 sales then? There is not much difference between the two consoles in current sales and the 360 still holds a respectable lead in overall sales. The 360 is overdue for a price-cut, a real price-cut, this isn't something we didn't already know.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the PS3 actually outsold the 360 in total since being released? Despite the higher price point and for the first 2 years or so, worse games?

edit: And someone tell me if those Sep price cuts aren't official anymore?

Nope, just a rumor right now.

As for Pachter, I have to wonder how much attention he puts to the software market. The 360 hasn't had a big system seller exclusive in a while. It got Ninja Gaiden 2 and UT3 over the summer, but those aren't big games for console folks.

I think when Fallout 3, Fable 2, and Gears 2 hit shelves, we're going to see a spike in sales even if MS doesn't drop prices. If they do drop the price, I think it's going to sell very well this holiday. Ditto for the PS3 with LBP comming up.

360 is sitting around 26 million units world wide. PS3 is around 15 million.

It just so happens that all those games are coming out in the 3rd/4th quarter...when console sales pick up anyway >_>

I'm not saying those games will suck / won't push systems but console sales of all companies will increase dramatically over the next few months as Christmas season rolls around.

Those numbers seem off from what I last saw....but I meant since the PS3 was released. The 360 has a lead because it was released before the PS3.

The article is referencing NPD, so the answer is Hell no. If you look at world-wide figures it's a little more hazy, but sources I have seen put the 360 a head by about 5-6 million, but NA is carrying the lion's share of that lead. Sales are about even in Europe and Japan has a 2-2.5 million lead. If you can find sources to prove my guesstimates wrong then please do so.

And you can bet all 3 companies are banking on that. No one is pushing consoles right now because it's back to school. This is the time of year when parrents and students alike are buying clothes, school supplies, ect. This is always the worst time of year for console sales. So why make a push now which would likely see only marginal improvements, when you could make a big push two months from now and use the momentum of the holiday season to propell you higher?

The gaming industry has been this way for years...I'm just not seeing what's newsworthy here.

Actually, most sources put the 360 around 20 million with the PS3 at 14 to 15 million, IIRC.

Yea...that's what I was thinking too. Had no idea where that 26 million came from.
