RPG's a Dying Genre?
Well, I just thought about how many RPG's are available on both systems (ps3 and X360) and it's very little, then when I think about PS2.... nuff said.
Then I thought about the time span between PS2 launch and Xbox360 okay makes sense that there's way more.
Then I thought about how many RPG's were available for PS2 3 years after launch, I counted about 25
Current systems; I assumed about 23 between the both systems. I didn't include Wii.
It seems like RPGs aren't popular anymore.
Is it just because the casual gamers are taking over?
I wonder.
Are games in general just releasing slower/less frequently or is it a mass writers block?PS3 - 80 gig w/BC

As monopolistic as this sounds. Square really controls the rpg genre if you ask me. The games THEY put out are really what keep the genre moving forward, moving at all really, and evolving from one step to the other. They force everyone else to step up there game. I don't see it as a coincidence that there hasn't been a decent rpg yet this generation, (save for mass effect, thank u for bioware) and square hasn't released an rpg yet this generation. I think the two are linked. They keep the rpg genre moving whether they are the ones releasing the titles or not...

Not a dying genre, it's just been shifted to the DS.
The vast majority of RPGS are Japanese made and for the most part the Japanese developers aren't doing much in the next gen console market. Hopefully it will pick up soon, but until then i'd suggest getting your fix from PS2 and DS RPGs. The RPG market tends to move at a glacier pace, and this generation has been even worse due to the limited Japanese support for next gen."Designing death and destruction for the masses since 1999."

I love RPGs, not just JRPG's.
I'd love to get more D&D or Baldurs Gate, Gauntlet etc
Some MMO or some Myst (adventure I know)
Kotor, Jade Empire style RPG's
Some SRPG's would be nice
I'd even go for some rpgs like Shenmue <-- Not a huge fan of this stylePS3 - 80 gig w/BC

RPG's aren't dying. Making them exclusive to a console that has fans who are apathetic to the genre is definitely not helping.

RPG's are everywhere this fall. And they've been on the 360.
They just take longer to produce then say a fighter.
Plus FPS is where the $$$'s at.
But look at MS e3. RPG's ain't going no where.
Fall out 3 is looking mighty awesome to boot. I think the 360 has at least one RPG hitting each month since June. Spectral Force 3 was this month.XBL: Phil Collins117

Fallout 3 will be awesome.. I'd avoid mentioning Spectral Force unless you're that desperate to add it.. Spectral Force games have been shovelware on every system they've been realeased on.
This winter does look like good for next gen rpgs on the 360 with the 3 big hitters of Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia and Last Remnant. Of course they don't hold a candle to the rpg i'm looking forward to most this winter, Persona 4 XD"Designing death and destruction for the masses since 1999."

Persona is a very niche RPG. A niche I dig. But it excels at story and character driven plot and emotion. But tends to be horrible with balance and combat fairness. I died SEVERAL times in P3 at random. The paper, scissors, rock gameplay can be very un-nerving.
And I swear that last boss was made just to piss you off. I love the games, but if they could balance them out a bit more to take away the frustration factor they'd be that much more fantastic.
Besides having Persona 4 in no way shape or form takes away from the summer/fall RPG line up of SP3, Too Human, Tales of Vespera, Infinite Undiscovery, The last Remnant, Fable 2. It's okay to throw MS a candy bar here and there. They've done us RPG geeks a service.
And we haven't heard a peep from mistwalker. That doesn't include Fall out 3 (08) or Borderlands & Star Ocean 4 in early 09!XBL: Phil Collins117

My fangs weren't out per se, just saying I don't think P4 over shadows them in the least bit. Maybe I took the "can't hold a candle" comment out of context.
ESPECIALLY not Tales of Vespera, Infinite, and Last Remnant.
Those are the ones i'm really looking forward to as far as 08 exclusives.
Is there a date for white knight? i'm just noticing we're still not hearing shit about this game. And disegia 3 (i never get the spelling right on that, sue me.)XBL: Phil Collins117

I'm a Persona fanboy, so sue me. The only game RPG i'm looking forward to more is FF13.
Disgaea 3 is in August, Valkyria Chronicles is November. If you want some smack down worth comment i'd say PS3 has better SRPGs coming out this winter. Or i could go with the fact that the PS2 had a better RPG lineup in 2008... Actually *thinks* the PSP, and DS had better RPG lineups too.
Not that it matters too much to me.. I'll be too busy playing and having fun to worry about which game console I was playing it on.
White Knight is lost in limbo, figure we'll hear about it at TGS though. Actually i'd wager most of our JRPG news will land at TGS."Designing death and destruction for the masses since 1999."

Quite honestly, the Xbox 360 is one of the worst things tha thappen to the genre, especially in the JRPG genre. 360 sells extremely poorly in Japan, its basically a flop there. They have mistwalker, a promising studio that develops games that really Japan centric...if those games had been published on the PS3 instead (they would have been one disc...lol) it would have re-vitalized next gen RPGs. As it stands, we have FFXIII to look forward to, and in terms of traditional RPGs with great production values? Microsoft ruined it for everyone.

Ehh, I wouldn't go that far. They got Mistwalker on-board to draw the Japan-centric gamers but being 360 exclusive definitely neutered the sales strength of Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, especially in Japan.
I will say that Microsoft could DEFINITELY do more for their JRPG line-up, first party and third party. Lost Odyssey got a single trailer and a short-run commercial. They should leverage their first and third party partners to release more related pre-release content to hype the game and garner it attention.
They should go this route with Infinite Undiscovery, take on some of the burden to get the name out there. Show they are serious about the genre and aren't doing it just for brownie points.+32in Sanyo Vizon
