Will Sony be quietly exiting the Console Race?
http://www.hdgamenews.com/2007/09/pl...y-exiting.html.
Just the title alone makes this article worthy of the Smackdown Forums LOL!
Personally I am skeptical of articles like this because they are written to gain a ton of attention, but still couldn't resist posting it.Last edited by Gnome; 09-19-2007 at 01:48 PM.

Well your link isn't working but I found the article.

Seems a bit sketchy to me if all they have to go on is the possible sale of the Cell plant to Toshiba. Toshiba has been parters with Sony and IBM on creating The Cell from the get go so it's not a huge surprise.
Plus I belive there would be a clause in the contract that still gave Sony a decent deal on the chips for the PS3. -

Which is not a cost saving measure by any means unless your outsourcing to a company in a third world country. Ousourcing this to Toshiba will likely have Cell's costing Sony a higher price

More likely is their Q3 results are looking rather touchy atm and they're trying to raise funds before the end of the month to make it look a bit more rosey.

Actually it's called outsourcing the manufacturing costs. They'll still buy the processors, but they take themselves out of the manufacturing side of running the factory. This usually runs a premium increasing the chip cost to compensate. This isn't a big deal and happens a lot.
The issue is mainly the last line, where Sony doesn't seem to be doing anything to grow, they're just cutting off parts of the business (Financial Services, and now the Cell Manufacturing) and selling them. What does that mean? Nothing on it's own, it just lowers the companies value because there's higher risk and lower potential. Just different is all.My PS3: FFXIII Lightning Special Edition

I can make speculate outrageous things based on that news too. Here's another equal unbelievable claim.
Toshiba is quietly giving up on HD DVD. In a deal with Sony, Toshiba would give up on HD DVD and in return Sony would agree to buy all Cell processors from Toshiba. Thus allowing Toshiba a larger profit on each PS3 sale.
It is amusing to read articles like that though so thanks for sharing. -

Problem with this is Sony denies chip operations sale
http://www.boston.com/business/techn...nology+stories
Sony Corp. is looking at ways to improve its chip operations but has reached no decision on whether to sell it, the company said Tuesday, denying Japanese media reports that it has struck a deal with Toshiba.
Toshiba Corp. spokesman Keisuke Omori also said no deal has been decided.Toshiba A2 HD DVD

If you recall earlier in the year there were some reports of Sony not making a Playstation 4.
