I'll play!!!!
Still too frequent: PlayStation Network Down for 16 Hours of Maintenance This Thursday
Amazon != sales.. and PS3 exclusives have had their share of relative bombs lately.. hence Sony’s new family plan.
And PS3 is far from the best blu-ray player these days. For $120, you can get one with HDMI 1.4 (needed for best 3D), a remote, HDMI cable and it’s already universal remote compatible without an additional adapter purchase.DarkRedRain (XBL, PSN, WiiU)

I've always stated that using your game system as your main playback device (dvd,blu-ray) is ghetto. I understand that in the 1st 2-3 years or so of the ps3, it was more economical, but you can buy much better blu-ray players now for cheaper than a ps3. So if you buy a ps3 now to be your main player, you are in fact ghetto and are a faux executive.

Not really. Most, if not all, legitimate review sites still have the PS3 as one of the top blu ray players. Most have it in the top 3, if not number 1. But I do agree - if you aren't much of a gamer, there is no sense in getting a ps3 for blu ray. It is kind of silly and more expensive than necessary. But if you are a gamer who enjoys movies, there really is no reason for an xbox...which, was his point..right? Well, if not, thats mine.

What year are these reviews from? 2008? They list it as a top player only because you can also play games on it. $300 for a blu-ray player is pretty expensive these days.
The ps3 is missing some features found on high end blu-ray players. It's also more expensive now than other blu-ray players that have the same features as the ps3. Really the only reason to buy it for blu-ray is if you also want to play those games that are exclusive to the ps3. The OP has only bought multi plats, some of which are not as good as the 360 versions.
The OP already had a blu-ray player and bought a ps3. He clearly didn't need to buy another, and certainly didn't need to spend $300 to buy a new one so he could give his old one to his brother.
In the end I don't really care what he buys. Why would anyone. I'm just going with my opinion that buying a game system (360/ps3) to playback dvd or blu-ray is ghetto. There are much cheaper options now. I also don't know how seriously I can take someone who thinks that a $300-$400 beats by dre boom box is "expensive" and that an audio sound bar is living for audio perfection. -

I agree with the OP, regardless. With his commitment to excellence (dre headphones aside), I have confidence in the future direction of this country.

PS3 is an excellent, full-featured, and (most importantly) fast Blu-Ray player. Its one real flaw, and it is major, is the lack of IR remote control support, though that's fixable. That and price. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having it as a BD player, but it is kind of weird to buy it if you JUST want a BD player.

wow. such anger. I guess it is a smack down. And seriously, I do appreciate everybody abiding by the no-personal-attack rules. Like, I admitted I have severe OCD in a post, and normally that is taken, ran with, and finally used to pummel me.
back to smack down comments: and congrats to the ps3 haters. enjoy that non BD and BD3D capable giant unwieldy gaming system known as Xbox!

Nah, no personal attacks. Some of the posters that responded are out of ideas on what kind of user-name to pick next should they get banned again. So they are all on good behavior.
But really, you aren't going to gain much smackdown traction around here this late in the game. About 4 years ago, this thread would have had 19 pages to it, with at least 12 infractions handed out. now, its like - whatever - lets just have fun with it.
