Well I turned that off a long time ago, so I forget it's even a part of the UI. Now if I could tweek the XBL UI in the same way then yeah, I wouldn't mind it so much. Maybe it's simply time for someone to homebrew it and make their own, not sure if that would be possible, but would be nice.
No, you can, it's under your system options I believe. The nerd is a tirelessly predictable creature whom the promise of boobies is like a bacon sandwich to a starving wolf. - Yahtzee

You claim that on your PS3 there is no ticker in the upper-right corner? I would love to know about this option to turn it off. Do you know what it is exactly? Google is not helping.
What CAN be turned off is when you turn on the PS3 and it goes to this What's New thing with scrolling ads. That's not the ticker though.

I'm really quite disappointed that they attempted to emulate the look and feel of Metro without adding any of the functionality.
In the Zune music app you can pin artists, but it'd be great if you could actually pin them to the home screen....same with games and apps and short cuts.

I don't think the ads are a big deal. its like google ads or facebook ads, I don't even pay attention to them, just hit the bumpers and I go where I need to go. The only time I was really pissed off about it, was when I went on Halo Waypoint to watch the Halo 4 video and they put a Sprint ad in front of it. They might want to not do that, but I doubt they will stop now.

I can't stand ads on the internet, so I have them disabled on those sites. I think it's a pretty reasonable argument for someone to say "ads are obnoxious and it's a bit insulting to see them get peppered into the ecosphere of a supposedly 'premium' service I'm already paying for." Throwing ads into XBL Silver, alone, would be much less egregious

The internet runs on ads...and suppose everyone knew how to disable them.....a lot of things we like would just...crumble......at some point in time the general consensus was to make everything ad supported and now nobody can stand to actually have to put up money up front to see something.
I wonder sometimes if it's sustainable...like the economy of ad supported businesses and the economy of ad buying businesses.....is there an equilibrium or will it contract and fall apart?
So here we are inundated with advertisements, and even the premium services are ad supported because it's a revenue stream, and since the majority of consumers have now been bred and fed and ads they get away with it.
There's probably no going back.PSN: AverryXC

But of course you don't.
In the context of making it a good UI or a bad UI, they are a big deal.
As for Facebook and Google, even they (while free, unlike XBL Gold) don't put the ads in the actual middle of the screen or over 50% of used screen real estate. Even they have the decency to put them on the edges.
EDIT: OK, it's fairly middle-ish on Facebook though still not nearly as dominant as XBL.Last edited by RedRedSuit; 05-04-2012 at 08:39 PM.

Yeah, but that comes down to a moral thing. I know these sites need revenue, its why I don't use adblock, I don't pay attention to the ads, but I don't need to rob them of their revenue stream.
Same with XBL, I've always paid for it for the better online service. I use it constantly, and its worth the money to me. The ads are on the dashboard are whatever, I can buy games and download my videos easily. It's just not a big deal.
I assume most people here use adblock, so they aren't used to ignoring ads. I am, its not hard for me. I usually just start up the console and go to game or quickplay. Or hit the right bumper and go to games marketplace and look at the just released tab or the videos. The only ads that bother me are the ones like the Halo one where they are marketing their own damn game and they put an ad in front of it. That's unacceptable, but the other shit just isn't to me.

There isn't a big difference. Signing on to play a game and having to see a large ad in the middle of the screen (surrounded by several smaller ones) is not that different than spinning up a video and seeing an ad placed right before your film. In both instances, you're paying for that premium service and they're still shoving ads down your throat. It's just that, in one instance, you don't mind it because you find it easy to ignore, but you find it harder to ignore the other instance. They're both on pretty similar footing.
