Well if you consider the advertisement of new content "ads", then PSN interface is just as guilty as Xbox.

If you consider 3rd party advertisement the "ads," then it is one per page/tab, and not really that much of a Hasselhoff.

I'm getting fed up with the increasing ads and the increasing XBL rates. I see no justification to whole thing. It's pissing me off. Like, I'm angry over it.

They need to tier their service. Paying to access additional content that we already pay for is ridiculous.

My impression is that they're doing it in a way that when they do provide a tiered service with no ads, people will see it a breathe of fresh air, instead of what I see it is, paying for a feature (no ads) that you had when the console first began. So in order for us to use a console we have paid for that originally had no ads, we'll have to pay more money to be ad free? That just seems patently ridiculous and bilking your customers, even the ones who payed, for more money. It's like if for instance I paid 60 dollars for a video game, should I expect now to see Coke and Pepsi banner ads flying across the screen, or having dedicated spots on the screen filled with ads? Of course not. If that's the experience I'm being forced to pay for, then I won't pay for it any longer, and I'll get my money back.

Well, ads in produced content is different then ads in subscription based services. Ads in games and films pay for the placement and offset the cost of the production and blah blah. It basically helps get the thing made in the first place.

i'm saying that large ads on the main interface is wack, large ads on the main interface for non-console related things (especially with rollover audio) is wiggity wack.
the XMB "ticker" can be disabled on PS3 so there's little comparison.

PS3's XMB is rather free of ads if you want it to be. Ads are -not- peppered and integrated throughout the UI. They are not the same, and MS need not really be defended in this respect. It's especially weak to hearken back to ye olde days of smackdown and try to justify a crappy practice with a weak attack on the other console.

I very much enjoy my Xbox 360 and have been playing it nearly every day for the last 3 months.

The UI sucks, and the ads are all over the place. If one goes into the game... it doesn't really matter to me. If used the UI a lot, it would be a bigger problem.

Not really; back in the other thread you were saying showing a Trine 2 ad wasn't an ad but highlighting system content; but in this thread you agreed that "of course" the things which I listed (some of which, like the Dance Central tracks, are no different from Trine 2) are ads.

Just like back in that thread, I just turned on my 360 to see for myself. I am currently in the default (Home) channel.

Much of the screen is a big border with nothing in it (just your theme's background). So let's remove that from the equation. What remains is the menu and the central panel. The central panel contains:

- 4 small rectangles. 1 is the game I want to play. 1 is "QuickPlay." 1 is "Stream new B.o.b." (some rapper, I think). 1 is "Join U.S. Marines."
- 1 large rectange (the size of the 4 rectangles combined). Currently it's cycling though "Watch The Grey on Zune," "Kinect games, controller-free fun for everyone!," "The Avengers," "Drop in on a game sale!," and "Fable Heroes free demo."

At any given time, by calculating from the useful screen real estate (the panel in the middle, where there is actual stuff), that's 25% not ads and 75% ads.

If one were to count it over time as well, then the only things that aren't ads are my game (small panel), Quickplay (small panel), and arguably "Fable Heroes free demo." There are 6 things that are ads (and most of them are bigger than non-ads). That's 6 to 3, or over 50%.

So, my statement that most of the default screen is ads is absolutely true as shown here. It isn't even an exaggeration. Unless "everywhere" must literally mean that every pixel must be an ad. Or unless you want to now align yourself with the "it's not ads, it's highlighting system content" camp for things like "Watch the Grey on Zune!".

If people feel so strongly about it, why are they supporting it? Cancel XBL and sell your 360. By paying and playing you are just supporting what you hate.

Because it's only one aspect of the system. That's a silly question. I still want to play the games, but that doesn't mean that parts of the experience aren't open to criticism.

That was covered in detail in the other thread. The ticket is small and in the corner of the screen, unlike this which is most of the screen; and the "What's New" thing can be turned off (which I did).

As far as I know, the only way you see any PSN related ads, which are just ads about content only, is if you hover over the store icon. That's it really, and that's perfectly fine by me.
