Well I suppose it depends on what you're attributing to this Golden Age. For every Game of Thrones there are 5 X-Factor/Fear Factor/Ghost Hunters/Red Neck Millionaire type shows that I could say fucking suck balls and reduce the quality far below from where TV was 10 to 15 years ago.

Not to forget that primetime is dominated, year round with: Biggest loser, bachelor, bachelorette, big brother, amazing race, survivor etc etc

Not to say that people can't take guilty pleasure in some of those shows. There's really no grand point here, or any aim to tell people what to like. The message is more just the grand scheme of 'quality isnt quantity' and saying gaming is much healthier because it piled in millions of casual wii fit and exercise/dance gamers -- I find that to be a very flawed assertion. It's even worse that this flawed assertion is most often couple with the flawed assumption that gains from these casual markets will further improvment and further investment in core gaming.
Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword
    Back Burner: LBP2, LA Noire
    Just finished: Anno 2070 (PC)
Home Theater: Panasonic PT-ae4000u, 110" Carada Brilliant White Screen, PS3

They go where the money is. The whole 'I like to make these games because I love to do it' has been flushed for 'I do it because I make fuck loads of cash'. Just look at Zygna, that's their motto. I've even heard some of their developers state they made games less fun in order to make more profit from their shovelware. Is that where games should be heading? If so, I won't be gaming much longer.

I don't think any entertainment industry is any more or any less analogous to any other. We have so many different means of distribution, and tiers, and enjoyment.

What completely separates games is the fact that they're $60 a pop, and people try to get the most guaranteed bang for their buck. If that means sticking with what they know, it means sticking with what they know. Since most TV is advertising based people aren't necessarily having to make hard decisions about what they put time into. Seeing movies is roughly $8-$12 a ticket, mentally it's easier for most consumers to swallow and technology is making it easier for movies to seem like they have a higher production value when they don't. Interesting how that is the opposite for games. They're no way to streamline a budget with games even though CGI and games are made completely in a computer. (Although with things like Unreal 3, it's easier for indie games to look great, but we all know what separates a game from being visually appealing to being a greater experience. Take Stacking versus Uncharted 3 for example).

We all know the value that a $60 game can give us, but you know what it's like. You'll buy $4 coffee every day, but when you look at how much you spend a year you'll gag.
