That's because there are presentation slides and quotes out there about the cell from DICE, GG, Polyphony, SSM, Bizarre, ND, Criterion, Pandemic studions where they talk about the cell in favourable terms. I value their opinion more than message board warriors who have a history of PC and xbox fanboism

Well I can see his point of view... one of the major problems with the PS3 is memory... and lack of knowledge on how to squeeze the most out of the Cell. Uncharted is amazing... shame other companies cant squeeze that they of performance out of the PS3 for their games.
Moving to the same architecture as the 360/PC for next gen will help with game parity for multiplatform titles. But then... I'd rather see a unified console instead. 50/50 ownership with MS and Sony... create a separate entity to build and sell the machines... You can log into PSN or Live based on the ID you have on the console... Not gonna happen. -
04-05-2012 04:10 PM #378Memory constraints and GPU bottlenecks have been more of an issue than Cell. Where Cell has failed is at becoming a mass produced CPU for other uses. Cell was a huge investment that was supposed to go beyond PS3

Padan, a second CELL is NEVER going to happen. The only party involved with the project is Toshiba, neither Sony nor IBM have any interest in the chip now since it turned into a dead-end for them. There's no new development and the chip design was atrocious for the vast majority of developers. It may have had a lot to offer, but there's no point to a CPU design that requires too much effort for very little reward (ND is an exception, not the rule).
Sony's abandoned the old Kenny-K way of thinking with its hardware. It's already outsourcing most of its component manufacturing and part of its development. Nothing in the Vita is unique to it (aside from the proprietary media), everything that makes it work comes from other companies, and quite a lot of it exists in other hardware-- some unrelated to the Vita, others in direct competition with it. The PS4 will be no different.
What people should be worrying about though, is overlap between consoles. With so many shared components between a new Playstation and a new X-Box, the issue wouldn''t be how good the hardware is, but how pointless it'd be to buy either console when 80% of their libraries will perform the same.
After all the BS surrounding third party exclusives going multiplatform, I find it incredibly annoying to go back to a console environment where the success of one console over another will be determined by how many software exclusives will either one have and which of them will be worth it.Great quotes on the internet:

The first time i gamed on a playstation console was back in 1997. My aunt got me the console and with it crash bandicoot. Practically all my favourite games were made on playstation. So from my perspective i have had little reason to move over to xbox or nintendo. From that end you can be a loyal sony fan.
However such loyality obviously is based on certain conditions. When i heard BC was going to be nerfed from the ps3 i had to get one immediately. Believe me when i say this. A playstation console next generation that has no BC whatsoever will be something that is unwelcome. I wont even touch it for a couple of years. Ofcourse unless it has GT.
I have had 2 of sony's consoles at launch and one in it's first year. That's why i refuse to believe sony is going to be so dumb and suddenly take away BC. It would be company madness in this day and age. There is no reason to do so whatsoever. You're trying to build a digital store for your network and build a core fanbase. Take BC out and then what? Cut your loyal fanbase in half. Why? Because the cell is hard to develop for. No. The cell is different. You have to optimise your code efficiently to get the best of it. We are no longer in 2007 however.
Software libraries are mature and ripe at the moment. I remember Christina coffin a former ps3 lead dev on battlefield mocking someone on twitter for moaning about the cell. The funny thing in all this is that guy was not even a developer. Funny that. It always seems to be some nut who has no history of programming or developing who has an issue these days. That and PC fanboys who want to see their shit in everything out there. I wont even mention xbox guys because there's little to it.
indy rex,
Outosurcing has killed of many of japan's tech prowess. In their efforts to go cheap and fast they have lost their control over production and quality control. That's why sony's tv manufacturing has lost alot of money inspite of being the world's third largest manufacturer of TVs. That's why i admire the koreans. Inspite of them being filthy disgusting copycats with absolute no shame on ripping of ideas from their japanese counterparts you would see them keep alot of stuff in house.
Thankfully while ken is not at sony, their is still the old guard who preferred sony do everything in house. Inspite of stringer's best wishes of turning sony from a hardware manufacturer to some entertainment schmuck of a company there's still hope. That's why it makes no sense from a financial and creative point of view for sony to have their console like some worthless PC generic box with a processor from AMD.
Virtually everything this generation from games, to PSN, to home, to dev kits to even their entire operating software including security is run on the Cell. Their own IP, their own design their own product. To throw all that for a generic pointless processor which they would have to pay for and have no control over it's design, retool everything from software dev kits to researching a new security system is frankly pointless.
That's why i dont believe much in these rumours. No company is that mental or suicidal. -

04-06-2012 02:04 PM #387Another rumor.. would be cool if true, but seems unlikely..Sources close to Xbox World magazine have revealed that Durango’s devkit features a “monster” 16-core IBM PowerPC CPU, a GPU comparable to AMD’s Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards, and a Blu-Ray optical drive.

Uh actually it makes every bit of sense financially. R&D costs WAY MORE than licensing existing processor tech from a chip maker like AMD or ARM (which they do for Vita) or even Intel. The most expensive components in a PS3 were related to CELL, not blu-ray or the RSX. Owning your own tech might be cheaper in the long run, but CELL wasn't Sony's own tech and the CELL on the PS3 uses a PowerPC-based design, the PPC design is owned by IBM, not Sony.
You don't understand, there is NO CELL development. CELL wasn't Sony's property or design, it was a joint venture and most of the work was done by IBM; both IBM and Sony are no longer involved with it. The ONLY party involved with CELL at the moment is Toshiba, and that's to manufacture chips for their own hardware. Toshiba isn't even interested in making progress with future development, they just want to use the plants Sony established for future CELL production to produce the existing CELL for their electronics, and to manufacture whatever electronic components they can in them.Virtually everything this generation from games, to PSN, to home, to dev kits to even their entire operating software including security is run on the Cell. Their own IP, their own design their own product. To throw all that for a generic pointless processor which they would have to pay for and have no control over it's design, retool everything from software dev kits to researching a new security system is frankly pointless.
They don't have to retool or research anything; an AMD or ARM or Intel-designed chip already has existing development tools, most of which would better suit third-parties.Great quotes on the internet:

I'd say that's completely unreliable. It seems more like a fanboyish rumor meant to draw attention away from all the recent PS4 news. Now all of a sudden it's "OMG 16 CORE CPU!" (which, let's face it... is complete and utter BS) and trying to one-up the recent news that a PS4 might be based on the 7000-series when last we heard it was a 6000-series GPU on the new X-Box.
