To claim that the Cell was something special in 2006 is not the same as to suggest that we should still be using it in 2020.
Besides, the Cell was a mixed bag for Sony. On the one hand it produced some fantastic looking games but on the other it cost them a ton of money and it proved to be a pain for third parties who struggled to achieve platform parity with the 360. While the lack of backwards compatibility saddens me, I think it makes sense to back away from the Cell and move towards more standard hardware.
(I must have won at least 10 defense points with this post. My SDF promotion should be imminent.)Last edited by Dennis M.; 04-05-2012 at 07:33 AM.

Cell is a cpu and it does it job very well. I laugh at ppl who think they speak up for developers. Platform parity has a lot to do with third party devs not taking advantage of ps3 specs properly and also the weak RSX.
There are things today that even conventional processors lag behind the cell.
Sony will be absolutely stupid to chuck all their R&D money and go with an AMD processor. All they have to do is get more ram, better GPU and beef up the cell to give it more SPUs. Plus they get to keep software libraries and ofcourse BC.
The only folks calling for sony to throw the cell away are PC zealots and xbox fanboys. Folks ofcourse who have no interest in sony games at all.
It will be glorious when the playstation 4 is announced and the specs reveal Cell 2.0 with 4 PPes and 32 SPUs. neogaf and their pc cheerleaders together with xbox tools expressions will be priceless to see.
Backwards compatibility itself will ensure sony goes with their own processor next generation. -

I'm fine with the power of both consoles. I'm not a spec whore.. if it looks (and sounds) good then I'm all for it. Don't bring on frame stutters cuz that shit irks the crap out of me. The only thing I'm kind of down on is the fact that the next PS system won't be BC. I hope MS does full BC for the current X360. There's still a ton of games on both platforms that I want to play or still in my queue.

Not sure if it has or not but without CELL, how are they going to do BC? It's like the launch PS3s having the PS2 chips and then the emulation stuff after, only to be removed entirely. I still wanted BC cuz I still had PS2 games but it is what it is. Current gen I've got even more games in my queue or wanting to play (just recently got GOW3).

Except kinect is pretty much shit and the cell isn't. I obviously have a derivative interest in cell performance - being a PS3 owner. Yet, from my earlier posts - I was simply saying that we don't need to lure someone like WI in here to make claims that cell will power a small city. It's just an overly complicated processor, a misjudgment there, that achieved great results.
Edit: looks like you guys got Padan Fain. Now you can see what I was trying to cut off at the pass - maybe next time you'll lend a hand instead of add gas.

Unconfirmed but pretty heavy rumors that there wont be BC. Letting people know very early seems like a good idea. It wont be a big deal to me, I'll likely finish up my PS3 games and whenever that happens - I'll retire one of my two PS3s (maybe put it towards a PS4 etc) and keep the other around as a media machine to power the theater

My main concern is the 700 rockband tracks I have. I'm pretty sure I'll have to keep my main ps3 around just for that. I dont give much of a shit about any other games that dont carry over. rockband will probably force my hand at keeping a console around after I have moved on to the latest and greatest. I've never had multiple machines from different generations.

Yeah you bring up probably the biggest concern - how will companies handle DLC licensing?
I'm betting that while sony may setup some transfer of license program (for games also available on PS4), most companies will probably expect you to repurchase or do without. I can see why you'd be attached to finding a way to keep those 700 songs; that's quite an investmentCurrently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

It makes sense because this generation demonstrated that it doesnt matter how great your kit is if it's complex enough that many developers won't spend the time to unlock its potential. Sony learned a lesson there and, if going more 'low-tech' gets them back to a space where everyone is comfortable with the architecture - then they've probably made a decent tradeoff. The cell proved to be a hinderance to some 3rd parties this gen
