I personaly dont care because I bought mine at full price before the drop. (was pretty pissed about it) so I already got mine, but this may be bad news for consumers that are waiting a year to buy one. So get it now at 500 people. SONY may have messed up on this one. oh, I got mine, and thats all that matters to me. What are your personal inputs on this? |

Not necessarily. PS3 is going to have price reductions even with their 80GB model since its going to be cheaper to make, meaning more people will get it. I expect people to swoop up th e60GB while they last. But its your opinon and I can respect that.

I think that it's a smart move for Sony.
Heres the situation they were in before the price drop/80GB announcement: They were the underdogs in terms of sales, they were quickly losing exclusives and marketshare and things were not looking good for their console's future. Sure they had some awesome games coming out, in 08, but there was nothing to really get people to go out and buy the PS3 this Christmas. On the other hand they had made a promise to their shareholders that they would stop posting losses starting next Fiscal Year. They drop the price of the PS3, and announce a new model, that is $100 more expensive. You take out a $20 PS2 chip and throw in a $20 hard drive, package a game with it and suddenly it's a lot easier to justify $599 for a gaming console. In the meantime you create a short term frenzy as you make the PS3 60GB more valuable because now it's limited edition, once they're gone they're gone, so people who were waiting are going to rush out and buy one, while at the same time you don't take a major hit on your income as all the new PS3's you make are losing you a lot less money. It was a smart move for Sony to make considering the position they were in. Along with scoring Haze and UT3 they might be able to attract a few more hardcore gamers to their side. Honestly though I'm not sure how influential those games are going to be compared to the massive hype machine of Halo 3 and other FPS' for the 360.

Annoyed, because finally Sony gets some good PR going in the general market, and then they take two steps back (one because of the announcement, and two because of not fessing up right away. No matter the company, if you don't fess up to something and wait a while, you lose good pr. See: 360 rrod issues). All of this good/bad news took place in a week timespan, so they couldn't even really ride high on their great E3 presentation that long. I already have a PS3, so I couldn't care less if they succeed or shoot themselves in the foot every day for the next year trying to get new people in. In the short term it's going to do well for them simply because of the percieved rarity of the 60 gig console. However, once that short term as over, how will they win back the undecided gamers who are now annoyed at Sony?

talk about bad pr what all the trouble with the 360 and their ring of death i have had to buy two so far will not buy a third until the problem is fixed!!! I think the ps3 is by far the best machine. It is no more expensive than the 360 as you do not have to buy the wireless addon.

PS3 60 Gig should have been discontinued the same time the 20 Gig was. Its not like Sony is making any money off it.

The new SKU isn't so much about the bigger HD, it's mainly for the removal of the PS2 hardware, so it's cheaper to make. Just like it's been in Europe. They knew they weren't going to be able to sell the 60 gig systems if they released this at the same $599 pricepoint, so they're dropping the 60 gig prices to unload them off the shelves. When that supply is nearly gone, I fully expect the 80 gig will drop to $499 as well. Most likely before the holidays.
