Well, we can speculate on the GPU price all day and not really get anywhere. That's why I made some generous discounts and still went on to make my point regardless. These guys want to launch consoles at a price equal to the market value of some of these cards being speculated - and even with discounts and variations taken into account, that's going to be difficult to do without massive subsidies - especially if the rest of the components are going to be top notch as well.

I see the chip being a 7xxx series GPU, just not a 7970 one. Remember, a Radeon 7770 can be had for $119. And that's retail, so let's count who's making the $$ before it gets to your computer. AMD...then the vendor (Gigabyte, Asus, etc etc), then Newegg (or other store). That's THREE people getting paid before you buy that card, a fully-fledged card with a full PCB and video outputs, software, other chipsets, DDR5 RAM, etc etc....
For M$ to buy a GPU in the MILLIONS of units it needs, without the TWO middle-men taking their cuts and without all the other hardware involved? I see them getting a 7770 chip for as little as $25.Intel i5 2500k (@4.7Ghz) + XFX Radeon 7970 3GB RAM! + 16GB DDR3 RAM (STEAM/Origin: Nealon_Greene)

To PC gamers, that sounds like a steal.
That's still very expensive if you want to release a console at $300-$400. That's over a quarter or over a third of your budget. You still have a shit ton more items and costs to include.
I'll pull a page from the michaelo soundbyte book and say "sounds expensive"Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

Other than GPU, what radical architectural differences do you think the 720 is going to use over the existing console? They are going to add more RAM, a better CPU....I can't see any crazy R&D (ala PS3) taking place. So up the shit that's already in there, a console they sell for $99 sometimes....yeah, I don't see it being as expensive as you make it out to be.

Well we just speculated a ~$120 spiffy new gpu. Rumors are also discussing some badass new 16 core cpu. Then there is the matter of RAM, hdd, sdd??, mobo, enclosure, psu etc etc etc. If they're going state of the art, as in these rumors, prices add up very quickly especially if you want to launch at $300-$400.
Bulk discounts help a lot, but we're talking about a pretty expensive sounding machine.Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

But the 360 has a HD a PS, RAM..all of those things....and it $99!! I realize the 720 will have BETTER versions of those things, but its not like its inventing anything new. If they stay with the same architecture and just beef up the hardware, costs will still stay low.

No, of course not, but those all have costs associated with them and we can certainly predict a cost increase on improved part specs (instead of 1 stick of ram, 2, 3, or 4 - or improved DIMMs, instead of HDD - SSD, etc etc).
At this point, it's pretty safe for us to agree to disagree
