Thread: Oh my Gee Wiz, Sony!

Uhh, I don't think you want to add the "you forgot to consider broken consoles" argument
This thread has gone beyond ridiculous. All because of an initial refusal to acknowledge that xbl gold fees = customers paying for matchmaking; an issue that had already been settled
Instead, we took a trip to justification-planet and when nothing there worked, we got on the sillyness train to nowhere, and people are now making excel charts and responding with internet articles.Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

Well most of that is due to Kinect, to be honest, but horrible products have sold well in the past in the US too, like pretty much ALL American cars in the 80s and 90s. Not to mention people who live on welfare but have 2 newish cars and the latest flat screen TV at their homes...

BTW while I WAS hacked and lost ability to use my gamertag a 5 minute call got me back online AND with full gold access. And it cost me nothing other than having to create an additional gamertag. I am missing acess to some of the DLC (season pass to LA Noire/Gears) since they are tied to my other gamertag (although the guy at MS thought I could still use any DLC that I had already downloaded (and I could) and of course achievements are attached to a specific gamertag so I can't earn achievements on the tag that I actually give a shit about but everything works just fine. I can play online, use cross game chat, use the store, get the discounts, watch Netflix, last.fm, espn3 (if time Warner weren't douches which they are) or anything else that Live offers. And anyone who buys a 360 can do the same for 3 months no matter what. No cost of any kind. Zero. Period.
That being said the 10 years of live that I have prepaid cards for (that cost me nothing..Thanks Dell!) this has seemed like a pretty good bargain for me.HD DVD list (updated 5-14-09)

That reads to me that Gold wouldnt be as big a draw if matchmaking were free. While I agree with that (to an extent) I still get good value from my gold account and would still pay it even if matchmaking were free. Actually if they made matchmaking free and Gold would give me asshat free servers I would pay them twice as much. I think that would probably occur as well since I am betting the foul mouthed 12 year olds wouldn't pay which would increase my enjoyment of online play tenfold. Not to mention all the other services that gold either provides or gives me a direct portal to in a easy to use singular interface.

Glad you enjoy it. We were speaking pretty generally though - and there, it seems that you agree.
A lot of this stuff was just covered over the last few days, so it probably need not be rehashed other than to say - glad you enjoy it personally, but it's probably not really a decent set of justifications more generally.Currently Playing: Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword

I feel it honestly just depends on how you use your 360 (or PS3) as to whether the pay service is for you. I have plenty of friends that have 360s and just dont play online or have a need for anything other than "I am gonna play the damn game for a few days then send it back to gamefly" I use Netflix, last.fm, party chat (a lot), and take advantage of a lot of the gold "deal of the week" offers. The savings in DLC alone would have paid for my Gold sub (even if it actually cost me anything) much like CF says that PS+ does for him. Adding things like ESPN3 has certainly (at least on my friends list) been a big hit and that certainly didn't come free for MS so there are additional costs associated with live. If making matchmaking part of the "pay" side of things makes it costwise justifiable (since more people will pay to have access to matchmaking) and I get more features added pretty regularly and the service just keeps getting better and better because MS has a revenue stream to pull from to do the deals and add content then I see that as a positive.
I certainly don't want the stagnation and half assery of the "free" PSN service (other than Netflix what has "free" PSN added?) (versus PSN+ which HAS added content). I found MP on the PS3 to be mostly a mess except in a few games where the developer actually spent some time building a lobby system that worked since Sony certainly didn't. No cross game chat (which from what I read wasn't possible?) makes getting together with your friends really a pain.
As I have said before I log in many nights to see full parties of folks (many from this board) all logged in to live and sitting on the dashboard for hours at a time. The few times I have joined those parties they have all been playing a game on the PS3 but using the chat system on the 360 because it works so much better (or because they were playing different games on the PS3 making chat an impossibility).
All these things combined are what costs money (not just PMs, Gamercards and Matchmaking Lobbies) and if everyone quit paying for live I don't see the same level of service being offered. THIS is why I gladly pay for live. I use most of the features that Gold offers me (I don't use Facebook or twitter) but I do use almost everything else and I see too many people on my friends list doing the same to say that Gold = Paying for matchmaking. They are paying for a complete service that also includes matchmaking. There are certainly people that are paying for gold JUST for matchmaking but I think that in all honesty even those people use some of the other services that are available BECAUSE MS charges for gold and included matchmaking in that cost to have the larger revenue pool to provide the extra services.HD DVD list (updated 5-14-09)

ESPN3 was pretty much just about porting a flash video player app to the 360. MS doesn't pay a dime to ESPN for the content since it's based on your ISP, and whether THEY pay ESPN.
VUDU, MLB.tv, Freemium MMO Free Realms are just a few additions to the free PSN, and they get discounts and sales too. Plus the PS3 Netflix is far better than the XBL version, since you get higher video quality and 5.1 surround sound. And you don't have to pay for a subscription.
Cross game chat is pretty much the only thing keeping PSN to be equal to XBL. If voice chat is so great, why won't MS make matchmaking free but keep voice chat as gold only? MS charging for online play is proof that XBL Gold can't stand on its own features. -

PSN content pulled from Amazon
Amazon has withdrawn from sale all PlayStation Network content including prepaid cards, without explanation.
“We have no announcements regarding this change in selection, however we can confirm that Amazon Digital Video Game Downloads is not currently offering Playstation Network Online Game Codes and Points Cards,” Amazon told PSN Stores when asked about the removal.
Links to the PSN content node have vanished from Amazon’s PlayStation 3 category, and the URL now sports a blank page.
Existing product pages show a “currently unavailable” message, but previously purchased content can still be redeemed.
Sony is yet to offer comment.
Thanks, Destructoid. -

Very weak attempt, FAIL. Unlike MS, you can pay for the exact amount you want on PSN as long as it's more than 5 bucks and won't be left with some weird amount left over. Of course if you're one of those ignoramuses who say "I'd never put my CC info on PSN again!1!!!", I guess you'll have to go to Best Buy or Walmart, or get it online from Gamestop, and frankly, you deserve it.
I never even bothered to change my CC info on PSN after it was hacked, and guess what, nothing happened. In fact, does anyone here know anyone who had their CC stolen due to the PSN hack? Though so. -
