Because Sony doesn't have the experience or expertise that Microsoft has when it comes to pc-centric ideas like online gaming, or online - anything, really.
Sony should stick with hardware and software, fucking farm out their online part of their business to Steam or someone comparable. -

Is Steam only used for online play? Even if PSN is down, I'm assuming people can still play the single player campaign.
