They do like making money, which is why I think that they won't drop the price of the 360 if they honestly think Kinect will drive hardware on it's own. They'll keep the margins on their console. I do think we'll see a 360 price drop, mind you. Just it'll be next year.

You paint such idealistic pictures of Microsoft as this company of benevolent, super-genius angels from heaven but a desperate drunkard picture of Sony. You drop price to spike demand. You maintain price untill the well of consumers willing to buy at that price dries.
Yes this is correct but, you don't drop the price to half it's original cost in 3 years time. Bane you want numbers how's this for size.

    Bane,

The PS2 launched at $299 on October 26, 2000 and in Japan on March 4th before that date. The PS2 finally saw the $149 price point on May 11th 2004. The PS3 launched at $499 and $599 price points on November 11th 2006 and saw a price cut not once but twice before landing at $299 on Aug. 18th 2009. These time frames are not even close to being the same. This is 3 years and 7 months vs 2 years and 9 months. Now, care to refute this?

why not? the PS3 launched at an exorbitant price out of necessity and the production costs dropped massively over those 3 years.

not sure what type of scenario you're fabricating.

Usually the game company tries to make money before the half way mark not at the end of the journey. Ask Nintendo if they'd like to be in this business model. They'd probably laugh you out of the room.

Once again, your picture painting skills are lame. Sony has announced that they are making money on each PS3 sold now, IIRC. The price has fallen in half and the manufacturing cost even more. Remember the console cost more or less $840 to make, ship, and give retailers their cut. That was at launch.

Good thing this gen is, based on comments from both companies, set to go longer than the usual cycle. Or is it a part of Microsoft's master plan to fool us?

Usually doesn't mean shit. They were establishing a new format with this machine, not adopting one that was pre-established. That must be considered when looking at the PS3's life cycle.

Costs probably went down more dramatically than they did with the PS2 (although they took a bigger loss to begin with, obviously). Meanwhile, the two SKUs changes the scope of the comparison. Then, we have to debate as to whether the PS3 had one or two price cuts. Because, the 60 gig went down to the 499 price point, but then they introduced an 80 gig at the 599 price point. SKU swap...or price cut? I don't know, but I'm not sure if the debate was ever settled. Now clearly, the $399 model was a new price point. No arguments there.

My how the wheels have changed, didn't you refute the $840 pricetag at one point? I think you did. Now, we know Sony's making money again I wonder if they've broken even on the PS3 costs or are they still climbing out of that hole as Microsoft is doing from Xbox1?

i think this is a diversion.
can we go back to the part where you suggested sony did things against their will?

Mic I said Sony increased price drops and sped up hardware redesign. I didn't say they did this "against they're will", it was the only logical answer for them to keep pace in the game.

you said "Sony had to do a few things they didn't want to do to save the sinking ship"

perhaps you'd care to logically rephrase that?
