Just got back, it was fantastic. It really is close to the best of the series, i would have to see it again in a more focused environment to really say if i liked it more than Prisoner(easily my favorite film) but it was definitely up there with it. I would even go to say this is probably my favorite film of the year so far, only other close contender is Up. It had a great tone throughout the film and i was never bored. It balanced really lighthearted and funny romcom esque jokes throughout while always keeping an air of seriousness that explodes at the end when we get a feeling for what is coming in Deathly Hollows. I dont want to spoil too much now so ill im going to say is go see it if you are even the least bit interested, and dont be put of by the PG rating like i was at first. I feel like the MPAA has really lightened up recently which is kind of good and bad, this definitely isnt a step back to the PG Chris Columbus family fare of the first two films, some of the violence may even give OotP a run for its money(Harry/Malfoy fight = brutal) but you may want to be weary of taking really young kids to see it...

Oh and it broke the theaters record for one night were i saw it. Over 4000 tickets sold at $10 each, with $40K under their belt in one night im sure that theater is happy. The place was packed, i had to sit in the very front row. Could this beat out Transformers 2?

I must say I will need to see it again to get a full impression, but I'm SLIGHTLY disappointed. Still a great film, but I think I also felt the book was less impressive IMO than the other books.

I think the ending wasn't developed enough w/ the big "invasion" climax. Just felt incomplete or inconsequential besides you-know-what. Found the flashbacks actually pretty interesting though. Wish they maybe even had more of those devloping tom's mom and dad and family like they did in the books.

Slughorn was played REALLY well though. I mean I always like their star teacher they introduce every year it seems, but Broadbent was amazing in that role. Such quirkiness but such DEEP sadness and regret lay behind his eyes during the whole movie. Found it actually very sad but extremely well acted.

I personally also just find the Harry/Ginny relationship poorly devloped. I mean sure she had a crush on him like what? a few years ago? And they mentioned it for a hot second. And Harry has NEVER shown interest in Ginny (at least in the films, but i even thought it was poorly developed in the books). I mean during Order of the Pheonix sure her role was SLIGHTLY beefed up, but he never even gave her a "knowing" look at any point that whole film. And they maybe have 1 "akward romantic" side look at eachother near the beginning of the film, and all of a sudden he's head over heels about her? I just thought it was poorly developed and didn't believe Harry having an infatuation with her. I mean with Cho Chang, at least he had a big crush on her that was OBVIOUS most of Goblet of Fire, and then it developed further in Order of the Pheonix. Ginny didn't have any developement like that IMO in the films

End rant, may have more to add later though lol

Here's a review which sums up my feelings VERY VERY well from Aint it Cool News:

Went to the Midnight opening w/ 20 pp. it was packed. I dressed up as Dobby the house elf. Wore a Pillowcase and nothing else

But I thought the movie was not as good as the 5th. There just wasnt enough action nor was there a big climax like in previous films. I know the book is the same way but we have to wait 4 more years.... ugh.

    I rate the Harry Potters:

    Harry Potter 4
    Harry Potter 5
    Harry Potter 3
    Harry Potter 6
    Harry Potter 2
    Harry Potter 1
    Format Neutral

I was looking at RT Community reviews and was absolutely shocked at how low it was, around 65% when i checked. Hopefully that will raise once all of the die hards calm down. Im a giant fan of the books, but i fully understand the changes and whats left out make the film, obviously they cant get all 700 odd pages of detail in but they have done a damn fine job i think.

most of this has to do with things in the book and not in the film, or very small parts in the film so it shouldnt spoil too much of the film but ill wrap it anyway.
    Spoiler:

For instance a lot of the criticism i read about was the removal of the Marvolo Gaunt flashbacks and how much of a major plot point that is, to which i ask is it really that important? All it serves to do is fill in Voldemort's back story and explain his hatred for muggles. In the grand scheme of things this is unimportant. All we need to know is that Voldemort hates muggles and wants them dead, we really dont need to know WHY. His tragic backstory actually gives the reader a bit of sympathy for him, not knowing it makes him an enigma the viewer doesnt understand his actions and because of this he is more intimidating, and more importantly he is easier to hate, which is a good quality for a villian.

Other than that there is the addition, or rather more detailed account of the bridge collapse and the removal of the muggle prime minister. I think the addition of the bridge scene is a visually more exciting way to cover the prime minister plot. It shows that the muggle world is now in serious danger from the death eaters from the wizarding world. The characters and dialogue from the book was a fine way to show this, but in the film an exciting visual works a bit better.

The addition of the attack on the Burrow is a bit harder to justify and i may have a problem with it, but its not too bad. I understand it was added to improve the pace and keep the viewer excited and interested in the film by adding more action. While this is understandable, dumbledore shows us earlier in the film that its quite easy to fix a house with magic, it does have the neagative side effect of the final fight scene being removed for being redundant. While i understand the pacing argument, the end is plenty exciting without another fight scene, i cant help but wonder how it would have been if they stuck a bit closer to the books in this instance.

Actualy this next bit is a big spoiler dont continue if you dont want to be spoiled.
    Spoiler:
Overall what the viewer/reader needs to take away from Book/Movie 6 is that the horcruxes make Voldemort immortal and they need to be destroyed before you can kill voldemort because he will just come back again. This sets the events of book/movie 7 into action, and was accomplished quite well in the film

22 million is an absolutely staggering number. However, since HP is normally frontloaded, it probably won't match TF2's 5 day opener. I expect it will take the #2 opening day though
