Default Superbad/Pineapple Express crossover movie coming

Quote:
This whole idea is just a bit insane! For one, Seth Rogen is in both movies, but as different characters. Two, I don't think they were in the same city, but maybe that doesn't matter. Anyway, let's get further into this news before we start discrediting the idea entirely. Back at my Pineapple Express screening during Comic-Con, Judd Apatow mentioned in the Q&A that they might considering putting together a Superbad / Pineapple Express crossover movie where the two stories intertwine somehow. Everyone thought it was a joke, because it's such a far-fetched idea, but I looked back at Greg Mottola, who directed Superbad, who was sitting directly behind me and ask him if it was real. He just smiled and shrugged, mentioning "we'll see." Now MTV chats with James Franco and he actually confirms that they're working on it!

Franco, who may get my vote for the best on-screen stoner ever, actually clarifies the situation. He explains that Sony has been pushing for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who wrote both Superbad and Pineapple Express) to write a sequel to Superbad, however, Rogen and Goldberg don't want to actually write one. "And so, an answer to that was to do a Superbad / Pineapple Express crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work." I'll be damned, they're actually trying to make it happen! And if you're still shaking your head in disbelief and mumbling about how that could never work, Franco even goes on to pitch an idea that could work.

"I could sell them [the characters from Superbad] something, but I think we'd want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it. And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we'd have to kill one of them off." As crazy as that all sounds, it actually would work! Now that it all makes sense, the movie geek juices are flowing in my mind! I loved Superbad, my favorite comedy of last year, and I enjoyed Pineapple Express quite a damn bit, so the prospect of combining these two into one epic crossover movie sounds absolutely amazing! And I'm not just getting wrapped up in the hype here, this sounds like something that could not only be immensely entertaining but a huge hit at the box office.

Pineapple Express and Superbad rank as #1 and #2 of my comedies ever and now they are combining? My God

This will be interesting to see how they actually work this out. I am a huge fan of Seth Rogan's work so I am all for it.

I didn't care for either of them, and found them to be the weak link of the "Apatow Comedies".

Superbad is so mean, that it's hard to care for anything in that film. I didn't notice how mean it was until I bought the BD and tried watching it again. It's just plain out hateful.

Pineapple Express is just meh. It isn't original enough, and the comedy wasn't absurd enough. It played it way too safe, and in the process created a rather dull comedy. James Franco and Craig Robinson were fantastic in their roles though...and pretty much brought the laughs.

1. How is Superbad "mean"?

2. What other movie is like Pineapple Express that its not original?

I love Superbad especially. I can really relate to the humor. Reminds me a lot of growing up. Sex was always on my mind. Hell it still is.

The main characters bicker at each other through the whole thing. I find it hard to believe a friendship between the two could have lasted as long as it did.

Harold and Kumar wasn't hateful, and they bickered...but it was out of situations that arose. I could see how they were friends, for it introduced them in a calm manner, and then laid the shit on the table.

Superbad started negative, and continued to be negative until like the last 5 minutes of the film. It was just too much hate for me. It wasn't like they were forced to work together or something...they've been friends for years.

Midnight Run
Cheech and Chong
48 Hours
Half Baked
Tango and Cash
Real Men (which South Park brilliantly homaged)

It's like every stoner comedy/buddy flick out there. It borrows heavily from the cliches, and barely throws in it's own "voice".

The film was dull, and not that smart.

You must have never had a close friend because close friends bicker all the time

And none of those movies had the plotline this had.

And if your saying its the pothead movie that is un original then you could say it about every genre that has been done more than once. This movie was definetly original

Superbad was extremely excessive between their bickering. Honestly, I didn't hate it, but it's definitely my least favorite of the Apatow movies and it's because it felt more juvenile, and hearing Fuck being mentioned by Jonah Hill got tiresome. That and the middle got really really boring.

lol the great thing about me seeing Superbad for the first time is that I saw it with my best friend I've known since Elementary School. It was so great because it reminded us of ourselves. When it comes to sex, he's more reserved like Michael Cera while I'm more over the top like Jonah Hill's character.

That scene where they are in bake shop, with Seth (Jonah Hill) and Jules. That was ME man.

i get what ya mean. I didnt draw penises but i had a bad habit of drawing tits. I would pretend to draw birds but next thing i knew the birds had two dots on them for nipples. I got in trouble one day when a teacher caught me in 3rd grade

Watching that drawing penises scene brought back memories for me

I have two rather close friends...and yes we bicker, but not to the hateful levels these characters go to. If any of us reached these levels we would have kicked the crap out of eachother.

The things these characters said together are grounds for an ass whooping. Friends should never belittle you to the point where it's hatred.

There's a difference between teasing and hateful words...the film clearly didn't understand that.

Well, I forgot a bunch of mindless buddy flicks/pot films. There's quite a few, and those are the ones I remember. That doesn't make my point not true.

The plot isn't original...not in the least.

The basic plot is that some guy sees something he isn't suppose to. He gets chased and comedy ensues. In the end he saves the day.

What's the plot of most "action films" or "thrillers"? Replace "comedy" with action or thrills and you have a recipe for another flick.

Anyway...

I'm not complaining really about the "plot" so much...more so in the lack of smartness in it's approach.

All the pot humor is recycled, and boring quite frankly. It wasn't absurd enough, and it felt boring.

Half Baked was absurd, but that helped it feel more fresh.

Harold and Kumar was surreal, and that helped it feel more fresh.

Then we have Hot Fuzz which is a much better send up to the Buddy Cop flicks. It's smarter and knows how to homage without seeming like a cliche. You are well aware of the fact it's poking fun at the cliches...not relying on them to hold the story together.
