I don't care what Carpenter does as long as he's behind the camera of an actual film. It's been almost 10 years since Ghosts of Mars.

I love his first episode of the "Masters of Horror" series but didn't care for the second season one.

Speaking of Directors Missing in Action.. what the Hell's up with James Cameron??? Makes the Best Aliens Movie, the Best Terminator Movie.. then makes Titanic, has an embarrasing Oscar Moment and dissappears into a cave. WTF????

I know he did some documentary on the Titanic after that and Jesus' Tomb I think, but nothing even remotely Theater-Worthy... King of the World??? More like Hidden like Bin Laden.

Apparently he's been waiting for the technology to catch up for his vision of the movie that he is now making, entitled "Avatar". It's shot in digital 3-D and is a sci-fi. It's due out next year.

Not to derail my own thread but I know a guy who's working on the visual FX for Avatar. It's going to be revolutionary.

Looks like just "teaser" artwork out there at the moment.. but it's got Sigourney Weaver in it and Michele Rodriquez... no idea about the script or plot yet but it's definitly space-oriented science fiction.

That's an all digital poster.

Sam Worthington is the star, he will be huge by the end of next year--he's also in T4.

Michelle Rodriguez being in something is not a large selling point unless its on Sci-Fi channel. Cameron has just gone Lucas. Hopefully his dialogue isnt wooden too.

So this is gonna be like Final Fantasy in Super-Realistic 3D? (Hopefully they get the animation down correctly) My beef with Super-Realistic Digital 3D these days is they forget to "exaggerate" the animaton.. so it always looks Stiff and Wooden. Any animation teacher will tell you you have to Exaggerate animation to a point where a still frame looks rediculous because once the frames go together they end up forming a more "natural" movement and look.. "Squash and Stretch" we call it.

That's been the problem with Final Fantasy and The Polar Express.. they relied too much on motion-detection human animation so it's true to life but gets interpreted in 3D form looking stiff as hell. They HAVE to exaggerate it!

No no no, it's not like Final Fantasy or The Polar Express. It's a live-action movie that is EXTREMELY heavy on CGI(they're saying 60% cgi, 40% live-action). But, apparently WETA(peter Jackson's visual fx company) has been working in post production for a full TWO years on just the special effects. Word is that that audiences shouldn't be able to tell what's real and what's CGI.

Lastly, it was filmed with a dual lens stereoscopic camera co-developed by James Cameron. The camera has two lenses separated by the same distance that our human eyes are. The lenses are able to focus on a close object by slanting inward, the same way your eyes do when you are able to attempt to look at your own nose. The end result, they say, should be the most convincing 3D cinematic experience ever.

I have my doubts(just because the effects have already been talked up SO much), but it IS James Cameron, who presented some of the best special effects ever with terminator 2 and titanic, so I've definitely got my hopes up.

We'll see come 2009.

As long as he gets Propeller Guy in there ... thunk... that made the whole movie.

That's actually a relief to hear... I'm still not impressed by the CG animation yet. I think there will be a day eventually when we can make movies so convincing you'd swear the people were real... then you can do an Idea I had a few years back... make a movie called "3 Thieves" staring Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean as Bank Robbers on the run from a Sheriff played by Jackie Gleason... the entire film is played by actors who are deceased... at the moment we can match voices digitally but obviously not CG to the point where it's THEM.

That would be wild when the day comes... "and winner for Best Actor goes to... Virtual-Elvis!"

I like how this went from a discussion about John Carpenter to James Cameron.
