Default Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman to play Riddler & Penguin? (RUMOR)

Here we go again...
Quote:
Part of the allure of Batman Begins was seeing a Batman I'd picked out a few years before (when my friend and I tried to figure out who the perfect people were to play all the iconic superhero roles). Now this latest influx of rumor-laden Batman 3 gossip is taking me back there. First, we had Angelina Jolie as Catwoman.

Now, Aceshowbiz reports that new "rumors" are tapping Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman to grab villainous roles in Batman 3 (something tells me "rumors" means someone scoured the comment section on Cinematical during our Who Should Batman Fight Next post). I'm sure you need no help figuring out who would play who. For some reason, neither of these men ever occured to me, but they could do wonders with the roles -- especially Depp. If you were going to take the RIddler, and make it dark Christopher Nolan-style, is there anyone who could even come close to Depp's suitability? The Riddler came after Tim Burton's days with Batman, but it could also give us an idea of how Joel Schumacher's film would've been different with a darker touch. And PSH as the Penguin? So good.

But what do you think? Do you have any better ideas?

Ugh, I'm on the side that saids...enough Mr. Depp!!!

He needs to appear less, he's starting to get annoying, and I avoid films with him in it now. That wasn't always the case.

I couldn't disagree more with the sentaments regarding Depp... He's done a fine job in everything I've seen him in, and I think he'd make a much better riddler than cary.

Seriously... talk about the perfect "Method" actor... most actors you see in films are the same in every film... Tom Cruise is the same in every role he takes... But Depp can transform into a role and make you forget it's actually Depp.

indeed, quest, Depp is VERY much like Daniel Day Lewis in the way he becomes the character he's portraying.

I don't like either choice though. PSH may be the only actor out there besides chubbso jack black who has the physique capability to portray the penguin, but he just seems off.

Jonah Hill from Superbad is also a popular chubby actor... they do seem to be getting younger in their roles these days instead of bringing in the 40+ actors... although PSH is rather unmatched when it comes to acting ability and these Batman films are more "Serious" then Campy so maybe that is a good fit (depending on Make-up)

I don't know about the riddler, he is not that intresting to me... but I would be excited to see depp as the next villian. I think most people would agree that its going to take something very special to follow up TDK.

Bob Hoskins would make a fantastic "Penguin". If they went for the "mobster/business man" type. He's a little old now...but that's not such a big deal.

Philip aint' bad either.

I'd take either.

However, NO DEPP!!! First of all, he's bigger then any actor in the film...so he'd overshadow them on a "billing" level.

Second, I don't think he'd be the right fit for the "Riddler". He would seem miscast...just like Willy Wonka. Ugh, terrible performance.

Third, it depends on the Riddler they want. I'd like to see Guy Peirce or Hugh Jackman. If they want to go with the more "subtle" Riddler, the one that helps police catch "criminals".

I'm leaning toward Jackman at this point.

look at the dvd's of Batman and Robin and Batman 89. Jack and Arnold got top billing. so having a villain be top bill in a batman movie is NOT unheard of by any means.

Bob Hoskins, good choice, but he is getting hella old. he woulda been a good penguin around the same time DeVito did it, for certain.

I agree with the NO DEPPP!!

He would just "Hollywood" up this movie, if you know what I mean.

You might as well have Stephen Spielberg direct it.

Not really... Does that mean do a good job acting?

Right, but it isn't a good thing either.

Nolan has a "unique" world in his Batman films, and he hires talent that complements his work. I don't think Nolan would use Depp, because his "stardom" would be too big for the film. It would draw far too much attention to itself.

He's not Burton, and his version isn't as "toyetic" as those films.

Sure, Ledger dying did this to the film...but to be fair that wasn't planned.

I'd think he'd want to avoid the predictably that hiring Depp would bring. To me, Depp is predictable. He's only surprised me once...that was in Pirates. I didn't know diddly dick about that film, and he was good in it. However, all his other roles are rather "predictable" and Depp-like.

I think Nolan is going to keep up the trend of hiring people you wouldn't expect.

*I don't like Batman 89, or Batman and Robin. The only film out of that "franchise" that I liked was Batman Returns.

Danny DeVito would have to reprise the role for me to want to watch the Penguin again. Depp would have to be the Mad Hatter or some other villain--Riddler?... no. I don't want to see the Riddler in another movie for a long, long time.
