Default Saving Private Ryan - SE vs WWII

Anyone crazy enough to fork over the cash for both?

I'm curious if the WWII Edition has better PQ. Netflix only has Special Edition, which I own already, unless I'm blind.

I'm looking for the best possible SD transfers on my SD movies that aren't out on HD/Blu. (I know, one day...)

Thanks.

If by WWII edition, you mean the one that looks kinda like an ammo tin... I can't imagine the picture getting any better on DVD.

I frequently monitored the bit rate on my Pioneer during playback, and it pulled around 6-7mbps pretty consistently. Which, for a film as long as Ryan, is pretty good.

I should have made this a different thread. There's a couple others I'm interested in. I have the standard widescreen Seven. I think the NewLine Platinum Edition is a upgade. Fight ClubM again I hve the regular widescreen and there are multiple SE releases. Any other major release tha's not on HiDef yet. Could be any region and even PAL. The Oppo is region free and does PAL to NTSC conversion.

Not really sure what else hs SE/2 disc sets or better releases from other regions. WOTW? Kill Bill?

(No LOTR's though. I rented the SE/2 disc or whatever from Netlix. Didn't look any better to me.)

Find the version with DTS sound. The original one is out of print, but you might be able to find it on eBay or at some other second hand shop. It doesn't have the lone featurette from the original, and doesn't have a Dolby 5.1 track (only 2.0 in addition to the DTS track). It says "Digital Surround Sound" and has the DTS logo at the top of the case, above the "Special Limited Edition" banner in gold.

As far as what's out now, I think the version from the 4-disc set has DTS, but the one from the 2-disc set does NOT.

EDIT: This one has the DTS track: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...NBLY0/$%7B0%7D The disc itself is called the "D-Day Edition" and has only been available in the 4-disc set.

aurora, the one in that box set is the d-day edition, and i've seen it available outside that box set.

i even saw it used once w/ the gold acad award slipcover, which was bizarre, as i'd normally only seen the sleeve on the regular edition. there is no way that edition would have included hte gold cover (but that boxset does look BAD ASS).

Yes Aurora, that 4 disc is the one I wondered about. I have the 2 disc. Any opinion on PQ between the 2?

This one I'm curious about, I have this one.

Interesting

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...rivateryan.htm

Looks like this older release is slightly better than the 60th Anniversary. Notice the comparison pics of Tom Hanks hand, much more detail in the top picture.

This older one is also the disc netflix shows to have. I should get it late this week, not the 60th anniversary like I thought. After noticing this, I think I'll def. skip the $50 4 disc set.

I think the original one with DTS has the same encode as the non-DTS version, given that things were removed to make room for the DTS track. If you can find that one, it might be the very best be for both PQ and AQ.

I think I may need to upgrade to a 1080p set when Spielberg's titles start to hit Blu-ray...

I have this disc and sadly no DTS I think it must be one of the original releases because I bought it at blockbuster the very first day it was actually available for sale.
