Does anyone know any movies to recommend in the same vein as Southland Tales or Donnie Darko?

see: the entire works of David Lynch, or those written by Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, Being John Malkovich).

Memento takes the cake in terms of making a new gimmick and making it WORK amazingly well.

yay someone agrees with me! see also:

the early works of David Cronenberg (Dead Ringers, VideoDrome) and some of his more recent (eXistenZ)
Synesthesia (a japanese movie about a real disease, where people taste color, smell shapes, etc, their senses are mixed up)
THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP (directed by Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine) absolutely brilliant and beautiful film. Tri-linguality throws things off a bit, too.
anything by the great Seijun Suzuki
    Brazil

(close but not quite: Tartan Asia Extreme's Doppleganger, John Water's A Dirty Shame (jeezus christ!))

An old Bogart film comes to mind: "Dark Passage" 1947. The first half of the film is shot in 1st person aspect. Unique and classic flick.

+1 for David Lynch films, especially Mulholland Dr. I've seen it at least six times. I love watching it with someone that hasn't seen it before. I'd stay away from Eraser Head... it's a little too different, at least for me.

    Also +1 for Memento.

I thought The Machinist with Christian Bale was good, it's a bit different.

Perfume and The Fountain are not your run of the mill films either.

Guy Madden films. He's the Canadian version of David Lynch.Check out Saddest Music in the World.
Lars Von Trier is in the same category.Seek out Kingdom Hospital 1,Kingdom Hospital 2.
Dogville by Von trier is readily available at vid stores and is very strange and abstract.A bit too much for me.
    Pleasantville is excellent also.

If you like International cinema you should check Pedro Almodovar's work. One of the most internationally acclaimed Spanish filmmaker.

    Directed by him:

    Volver
Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother)
    Carne Tremula (Live Flesh)
    Kika
    Tacones Lejanos (High Heels)
    Why...... So......Serious?

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint. It's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... timey wimey... stuff.

    The 9th Configuration.
A group of mentally ill soldiers realise that their new doctor is even madder than they are.
Great film, darkly comic and strangely uplifting.
