Default Peter Bracke's Reviews

can someone from the staff(perferably Peter) tell me whether not he gives a film it's score in comparison to his scores of other films or does he just give the score he thinks w/o comparing it. Or does he compare to other films in the genre?
For example..according to Peter, Dude Wheres My Car is better than American Gangster and on par with The Mist.
I mean come on..a stoner movie of the worst degree is on par with stuff like The Last Samarai.
There's countless other examples!
House of Wax and Hitman better than Rambo! I mean cmon.
So please enlighten us!

I like his reviews too. Loved his Transformers review. Looking forward to his Godfather and Iron Man reviews.

Ane that says 'House of Wax' was good has wax as a brain.

My favorite reviewer is Ken, although Josh goes into great detail. Peter is well, no comment.

I hear what your saying ben... and I am sure there are others who agree with you. However, I like and value Peter's reviews and opinions. I do not always agree with him on all counts..but I do respect his view and where he is coming from. To each his own and all that.

I think Peter ascribes to the Ebert school of criticism. He rates a 'Lethal Weapon' according to other 'Lethal Weapon' type movies, not in comparison to 'Casablanca' or 'Citizen Kane.' I think he rated 'Dude, Where's My Car?' in relation to other films in that "genre."

I never said I didn't like his reviews. I just am asking if he takes what he gave other films into effect when reviewing.

He probably gave these films higher grades because he felt they suceeded in what they were trying to do. Most of the time I agree with what he says or understand the logic behind why he dislikes something.

You're right, that's messed up. Dude, Where's My Car is a much better movie than The Last Samurai.

Anyway, I don't think you understand just how subjective these ratings are. As Mike pointed out, Ebert has a good system for this that most film critics agree with. There's no way to rate the "goodness" of movies on any sort of objective scale. The notion is absurd. The more rational alternative is to rate how well the movie does what it sets out to do, and whether that goal is worth your time.

The Last Samurai wanted to be a great historical epic that would win lots of Oscars, but it kind of sucked at it.

Dude, Where's My Car just wants to be a silly stoner comedy that will make you laugh, and it does pretty well at that.

Then you have something like Meet the Spartans that just wants to be the laziest, unfunniest sort of cash-in "comedy" without any laughs. It may have achieved that goal, but the goal itself sucks and is a huge waste of your time.

I usually do not read his movie reviews. I just read the picture and audio sections of his reviews. I can form my own opinion if I like the actual movie or not.

agreed

I dont pay attention to Peters reviews really though. I go by Ken and Josh. Although, I didn't like the review Josh gave of Belly other than that i've thought all of his reviews as well as Kens were on point.

I think all the reviewers here do a damn good job. Maybe its the 5-star rating that's flawed. Every star is worth 20%. That's a huge chunk. Although, I guess they do 1/2 stars as well.....

Anyways, its not a job I'd want! LOL. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

.....thou shall not bash Last Samurai. i call blasphemy on you. i agree, they tried to make it an epic and win awards, and in THAT aspect, it failed, but Ken Watanabe got the Academy respect he deserved from it. .
