The unveiling was streamed live from Microsoft's Redmond campus.

Today, Don Mattrick announced the XBOX ONE. After nearly eight years of the 360 and the emergence of Xbox LIVE as an entertainment and social platform, Microsoft was quick to pitch the new system as the future of living room.

The new Xbox One was presented with a list of specs including 8GB RAM, an 8 Core CPU, a Blu-ray drive, USB 3.0 and a 500GB Hard Drive. The system was described as being controlled through three different means, including the new Kinect sensor, the new controller, and SmartGlass.

The system contains a hybrid operating system whose upswing is said to allow for instantaneous switching between games and other applications. Also, applications can be developed without the need to adhere to the gaming OS, a distinction for the new system that makes app development seem closer to a Windows like experience.

The new controller sticks close to the 360 controller design, but with an internal battery, corrected d-pad, and app-switching buttons in place of the back and start buttons. According to Microsoft, the changes are among some 40 overall design changes to the controller.

The entire event preceded promised E3 reveals, and had a lot of time focused on entertainment options like instant on Kinect controls, and user-specific game and entertainment selection derived from user habits. The system was described as a way to make the TV more intelligent and make the living room experience "simple, instant, and complete."

The system contains both an HDMI out and HDMI in, and has the ability to DVR games. The new achievement system was described as dynamic.

Some of the games featured for the system include EA Sports' 'FIFA', 'Forza 5', 'Quantum Break' (a new title from Remedy), and of course the highlight, 'Call of Duty: Ghosts.' The 'Ghosts' footage was important enough to preclude any sort of conclusion for the briefing, and the sudden ending was less than ideal.

A new HALO TV series involving Steven Spielberg was teased, but more importantly, Microsoft promised that the new system would get 15 exclusives with 8 new franchises in the first year.

This system was described as being available "later this year," presumably during the holiday period. System pricing was not mentioned.
New Guilty Gear has been announced with a 3D/2D fighting engine ala SF4.
Hope this one turns out good since I've been a fan since the first game on PS1. Arc System seems to be pumping out fighting games these days between this, the new Blazblue and a rumored PS4 game.

In a surprising turnabout, EA has announced via Venture Beat the end to online passes. The program that began with 'Dragon Age: Origins' and extended across EA's line of online and single player titles, saw new games bundled with one-time codes that tied some content, including multiplayer access, to players' Origin accounts. The idea was for EA to capture a part of second-game sales by selling the coded content directly online.

Venture Beat is reporting that an email from EA's senior director of corporate communications John Roseburg states, "Yes, we're discontinuing Online Pass. None of our new EA titles will include that feature."

While some other publishers have and likely will continue to ape the practice, none have used it to the extent that EA has. The program originally was pushed as "Project ten dollar," and described by EA as a way to offer more content, rather than require day one downloads for either awkward or integral features.

"Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward."

The elimination of online passes by EA marks the latest move in series of interesting moves by EA that include searching for a new CEO, landing the massive 'Star Wars' license, laying off over 1,000 employees, marginalizing Wii U support, and even announcing a new 'The Sims' title that won't need to be always online.

"We’re still committed to creating content and services that enhance the game experience well beyond the day you first start playing."
Twitch, which is also known as Twitch.tv, is coming to the 360. Twitch is the current leading video platform, and Twitch streams vary from the top players in games like 'StarCraft 2' and 'League of Legends' to the newest players of more obscure games like 'Battletoads.'

At launch, the 360 app will allow Xbox Gold members in the US to view the top 300 live channels on Twitch. The Twitch app will support Kinect voice and motion controls in addition to normal controls.

Twitch streams are so popular that many channels exist as the streaming player's primary employment, which is funded through donations and ad revenue. Streams contain speed runs, top level play, zany challenges, highly obscure games, and even games that leak prior to release dates.

A report originating with 'Tales' series boss Hideo Baba describes a planned HD version of 'Tales of Symphonia.' Much like other 'Tales' titles, the GameCube and PS2 title spawned multiple manga and anime adaptations, and the game itself was popular for its combination of real-time battle encounters, soft art style, and classic (at the time) RPG characters. The game is also know for a great set of New Game Plus mechanics, which tempt players throughout any serious playthrough.

In 2008, 'Tales of Symphonia' received a semi-sequel for the Wii in the form of 'Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World.' While not know as a classic, the game is good enough that certain changes could really open it up to new audiences.

The re-release will include both games with HD visuals, and presumably PS3 specific controls for certain parts of 'Dawn of a New World.

Longtime 'Tales' publisher Namco Bandai has yet to confirm this "perfect" edition of 'Tales of Symphonia,' but details including a release date and pricing is expected soon.

Rockstar Game has announced that 'Manhunt' is coming to the PS3. The game, which puts player in the kill-or-be-killed world of James Earl Cash is one of Rockstar's most violent games, and also something of a cult hit.

'Manhunt' is coming to the PS3 as part of the PS2 Classics line, which means that it is a digial versions of the same game that went on sale in 2003 for the PS2, no more and no less. Rockstar regularly runs into licensing issues with re-releases, but in the case of 'Manhunt,' the PS2 era violence might not be able to manage an HD re-release.

The PS2 Classics version of 'Manhunt' will be priced at $9.99 / €9.99 / £7.99 and joins 'Bully,' 'Red Dead Revolver' and all of the PS2 era 'Grand Theft Auto' titles in the PS2 Classics Collection. Rockstar also has teased that 'The Warriors' may be the next Rockstar title to join the PS2 line. The PC version of 'Manhunt' is available on Amazon and on Steam.

Techland is finally ready to show 'Hellraid,' the first person fantasy hack & slash from the makers of 'Dead Island.' Even with game's medieval fantasy setting, comparisons with 'Dead Island' are hard to escape.

Unlike the touristy setting of 'Dead Island,' 'Hellraid' is a game about hardened warriors. Weapons last longer, and class differences are significant. Where 'Dead Island' allowed each player to brutally brawl enemies, 'Hellraid' requires co-operation between varied classes, including magic users. Likewise, 'Hellraid' is a mix of open areas and dungeon-like levels, and the world's layout is not the straight-forward one of 'Dead Island.'

The game is attempting to strike a balance in gameplay where players need to cooperate to survive, but remain in personal competition for loot and for the number of enemies bested. The design of the game encompassing may still see significant changes.

"Fight, develop skills, collect loot and craft weapons while exploring a world devastated by demons. Treacherous swamps, squalid prisons and ancient catacombs will be among the settings of your adventure. Hellraid offers what’s best in the hack & slash genre but viewed from the immersive First-Person Perspective."
'Hellraid' is expected to come to the 360, PS3, and the PC later this year.
Bethesda has announced 'Wolfenstein: The New Order,' the latest revival of the thirty year old shooter. The plan is to bring the game to the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and "next-generation consoles" before the end of the year.

The last entry in the series, 2009's 'Wolfenstein,' was developed by Raven using an advanced version of id Tech 4, but this latest entry has been placed in the hands of a new developer. Developer MachineGames was acquired by Zenimax in 2010, and put right to work on this new 'Wolfenstein' using id Tech 5. MachineGames is made up of former Starbreeze studios employees, which may intrigue fans of 'The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay.'

'Wolfenstein: The New Order' is being teased as taking placed in an alternate 1960's where the world is still reeling from a World War II that concluded in Nazi victory. Players can expect to once again take up the role of William 'B.J.' Blazkowicz, and this time lead a subversive resistance against a mass of Nazi super weapons.

EA going ahead with one of its most successful franchises amid tumultuous changes.

Electronic Arts has announced that its Maxis label, once the developer name for Will Wright's 'Sim City' studio, is bringing 'The Sims 4' in 2014. The announcement was made on EA's website without much accompaniment, but the game is has been slotted for the PC and Mac platforms without any mention of consoles or smartphones.

It has been nearly four years since 'The Sims 3' released, and a 2014 date for 'The Sims 4' is in line with the series' normal sequel interval. And yet, the announcement comes as EA continues through a huge shake-up from the CEO down. At the same time as various projects are being cut or restructured, EA continues to push its Origin platform, an initiative that seems to have driven a wedge between EA and Nintendo.

EA is also still trying to navigate the treacherous waters that resulted from the 'Sim City' launch debacle. The ongoing bad PR from the game's controversial always-online requirement is still heightened by stories of disconnects and lost saves, but the game is nonetheless a success. Maintaining that success and downplaying player issues may be one reason why EA has stopped short of providing much beyond a confirmation of development for 'The Sims 4.'

While 'Sim City' was a re-launch of a franchise that had fallen off to the wayside, 'The Sims' is huge franchise that has traditionally worked off-line with fans purchasing major expansions and content packs to fuel the success. That audience, which has remained faithful through the explosion of fremium Facebook and iOS games, may not be thrilled to find a new version that demands a constant internet connection and online-only saves.

EA or "Maxis" to provide further details soon.

'Aliens: Colonial Marines' and 'Section 8' developer suddenly without funds.

TimeGate Studios, the onetime developer of RTS titles 'Kohan' and 'Axis & Allies' has hit the skids. After working on multiple 'F.E.A.R.' titles, the studio followed up with two 'Section 8' titles and the woefully delivered, Gearbox-helmed 'Aliens: Colonial Marines.' It is those recent projects of dubious quality that may have sunk the company.

What began with a legal battle with 'Section 8' publisher SouthPeak games has turned very dark for TimeGate. Despite initiating the courtroom drama, four years of legal fees have left TimeGate owing SouthPeak $3.75 million.

At the same time, the fallout of 'Aliens: Colonial Marines,' a title which so under delivered it has left egg on the face of SEGA and Gearbox, would seem to have hurt TimeGate's chances of landing new contracts.

Nevertheless, TimeGate recently announced "MINIMUM,' a free-to-play PC only shooter. This announcement of course followed TimeGate's normal mode of operation, laying off the majority of employees.

TimeGate is part of a small stable of companies under the same ownership that include health care company Healix, and yet, TimeGate has now filed for bankruptcy.

From Polygon, "The petition filed by TimeGate lists less than 50 creditors owed money by the game developer and total liabilities ranging from $10 million to $50 million. TimeGate's top creditors include companies like Unreal Engine developer Epic Games, online game service Agora Games and transmedia developer DJ2 Entertainment. Creditors listed in court documents also include a local pizzeria, to whom TimeGate owes $34.80, and video game agency Birthplace Management Group, which is owed $20,539.20."

While it is possible that TimeGate may yet manage to escape its debt and ship another title, the company's soured partnerships and reputation are less easily erased. 'MINIMUM' had been scheduled for an April 16th launch on Steam's Early Access, but that date was missed, and would seem to be on indefinite hold.

Nintendo's 'Game & Wario,' an offshoot of the long running, Game Boy Advance born 'WarioWare' series, is heading for a June release for both North America and Europe.

'Game & Wario' is a title completely designed for the Wii U's GamePad. The game features both single player and multiplayer modes with multiplayer still being operated through a single GamePad.

Traditionally, the series has been known for wacky, frenetic gameplay that often occurs in bursts of a few seconds. Some iterations have focused heavily on Nintendo specific inputs, and 'Game & Wario' sees the gameplay shifting from the big screen to the GamePad and back again with a frequency not seen in other games.

'Game & Wario' is scheduled for a June 23rd release in North America, (June 28th in Europe), and is available for pre-order at a value price of $40.

Leaked torrent version of the game leads to amusing pirate progress blocking.

Developers leaking versions of their games with built-in progress blockers are nothing new and are used to confuse game torrenters during a game's launch window. Usually though, the progress blocking technique takes the form of a subtle bug or kill screen, but in the case of the recently released 'Game Center Tycoon' the leaked version altercations are a bit more poignant.

'Game Dev Center,' a title which could be described a clone of another game, is floating around in a leaked version that sees the player's progress ultimately fatigued due to game piracy.

It seems after one day on sale, the $8 game was suffering with 3104 of the 3318 copies being played being pirated copies. With so many playing the leaked version, several messages requesting help appeared online that seem to drip with the irony that the developers had in mind.

One such message was captured by Eurogamer, "I can't progress further.. HELP! Guys I reached some point where if I make a decent game with score 9-10 it gets pirated and I can't make any profit. It barely sells 100k units.... I mean can I research a DRM or something... There's no point in inventing a new engine because the revolutionary game mode out it will get pirated and I will not be able to cover my expenses."

As messages from the two man dev team and those game pirates that were looking for support online continue to surface, the game has managed more publicity than would have been expected otherwise. The game's website and main buying portal are down, the cause of which remains unknown.

Patrick Klug, co-developer of 'Game Dev Tycoon,' "As a gamer I laughed out loud: the irony!!! However, as the developer, who spent over a year creating this game and hasn't drawn a salary yet, I wanted to cry."

'Game Dev Center' is available DRM-free for the Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Eurogamer

IGN is reporting that 5th Cell is busy working on 'Scribblenauts Unmasked,' the next installment of the 'Scribblenauts' franchise. Many aspects of the title are still in flux, including the name, but what IGN states is certain is that the title is part of DC license and will feature characters and locations from the DC Universe. Also certain for the title are the target platforms. Much like the title's predecessor, 'Scribblenauts Unlimited,' 'Scribblenauts Unmasked' is headed for the Wii U, PC, and 3DS.

The series began with the first 'Scribblenauts' on the 3DS, and features puzzle scenarios where the player needs to draw items that help Max, the player character, proceed.

For 'Scribblenauts Unmasked,' one of the scenarios described involves the player being in the sewers beneath Wayne Manor and needing to proceed past an obstructing Croc. Drawing a hamburger only feeds Croc, while some dynamite ignites a rage that sees Croc removed by some combination of the police and Robin. Later, the player encounters two police officers, one of which is actually Clayface. By first X-raying both cops, the player can defeat the exposed Clayface with a freeze gun.

While Max has traditional been the protagonist in the 'Scribblenauts' games, that may change for the new title between now and E3.
