In the year 2022, the United States is prospering with an unemployment rate at 1% and crime at an all-time low. To keep this prosperity the government creates an annual 12-hour period from the evening of June 7 to the morning of June 8 in which all criminal activity, including murder, becomes legal. During this time, police and hospitals suspend all assistance services and execute citizens who refuse to participate. This event, known as The Purge, is designed to serve as a catharsis for the American people, giving them a chance to vent all negative emotions however they desire, with the ultimate goal of keeping unemployment and crime at extremely low levels for the rest of the year. During this night of violence and crime, a stranger screaming for help is let into James Sandin's fortified house during their yearly lock down. The family is then forced into conflict between their beliefs of right and wrong, and a sequence of events involving the stranger's pursuers puts the family's chances of survival in danger.

Hello dear high-def digest community!
I would like to introduce our effort to produce an international action-adventure feature film: TOGETHER with the creative input of the interested web community. This is a German crowd-sourcing project, but we want to share and to produce it with the whole world, and we will shoot it in English language, because this is the best language for genre films.

Pre Production begins NOW!

Who wants to work with us, who wants to give input to this challenge?
We have already built up a reputation with our adventure movie "CASCADEUR - THE AMBER CHAMBER" (1998), which you can watch for free at youtube.com/watch?v=Mv5v4BHIGtU (sorry, only in German language. We are working on subtitles!). It is a tribute to Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. We also aroused attention with "AS FAR AS MY FEET WILL CARRY ME" (2001), an epic adventure drama.

We are looking forward to discuss your ideas and to answer your questions!

Our website: cascadeur.de/wordpress/crowd-movie-in-english/
Greetings

It's Friday night, and barring any unexpected changes in plans, I will be watching one of my Criterion blind buys tonight. The question is, which one?

Last week I watched 'Naked Lunch'.

These are my options for tonight:

- The Seventh Seal (I've only seen about half an hour, before buying the blu-ray).
- The Red Shoes
- Days of Heaven
- Ministry of Fear
- Letter Never Sent
- The Magician
- Fanny & Alexander (though at 5 hours, it might be too much for tonight)
- Godzilla
- 8 1/2
- Paris, Texas
- Gate of Hell
- Leon Morin, Priest
- Last Year at Marienbad (Sealed...and while I want to see this, I may keep it sealed for now).

I believe I may have fallen asleep the first time I watched Blade Runner. If I didn't, that gives you an idea of the impression it left on me. I'm sure I was no older than 17, and knew Blade Runner as a famously important sci-fi movie. For what it's worth, it was the Theatrical Cut.

I'm sure I had seen it once more, giving it another shot, only to be left with a sleepy memory. The only other movie to lull me to sleep so consistently was Heavy Metal (but that's a whole different subject).

Since then, I've expanded my exposure to types of films, gained some understanding and appreciation of films as art, and also developed more specific tastes. One of which is noir detective dramas.

Not long ago, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was released, and I was quick to pick it up. Having seen it in theaters as a kid, the combination of live action and so many classic cartoon characters was entralling. Rewatching it, I saw it for what it really was. A classic "noir" detective story. Just with very bright colors.

This brings me to Blade Runner. I picked up the Final Cut a few weeks ago, and rewatched it last night. This time, I didn't sit down to watch a "sci-fi" movie. I sat down with the intent and interest of watching a noir detective story. I LOVED IT. Suddenly, the too-dull-for-sci-fi pace became a tense investigation. Having mixed feelings about the set designs, I was no longer looking at them with that critical eye sci-fi viewers can get about the genre. It just became background detail I accepted, and enjoyed.

I just had to change my mindset, and in turn, what I was (consciously or subconsciously) expecting.

Has anyone else had this experience with Blade Runner, or another film?

Regal Entertainment Group's deployment of the Sony Entertainment Access System is expanding. Already it has reached 400 theaters in the US, and the plan is to bring the system to 6,000 screens by the end of the month.

In contrast to the very limited offerings of open captioned film showings, the Sony entertainment Access System utilizes a set of glasses, headphones, and a wireless receiver to offer multiple forms of assistance for movie goers. The system can be used to display closed captions on glasses, and captions that describe the film's audio. By plugging the headphones into the receiver, the system can also increase the volume for the listener or even provide an audio description of the on-screen action.

The system works for both 2D and 3D films with one caveat. The system is dependent on the movie-makers for providing the captions. As Regal continues to roll out the system by pairing a Sony Entertainment Access System with each theater's projection system, moviegoers need only request an Accessibility Device at equipped theaters. Viewers can then use the system without the need to affect others and without requiring a special screening.

Regal maintains a list of theaters and showings with their accessibility options at their website.
Feast your eyes on what could have been! In the early- to mid-2000s, Warner Bros. was still recovering from 1997′s Batman & Robin, and in search of a director who might be up to the challenge of reinvigorating the franchise. One of those filmmakers was Christopher Nolan, who obviously went on to get the gig, but another was Darren Aronofsky who teamed up with Frank Miller to pen a screenplay called Batman: Year One that actually had nothing to do with the classic comic-book storyline. Instead of the traditional elements of the Batman mythos, this new version featured Bruce Wayne as a homeless vigilante and Alfred as an African-American mechanic going by the name Big Al.

Although the approach was scrapped in favor of Nolan’s Batman Begins, the project still lives on in the form of concept art. Comic Book Movie scored the following batch of images, giving you a look at what might have been. You can see a slew of costume designs as well as takes on the Batmobile, some weapons and even Catwoman and Jim Gordon. Aronofsky clarified last night on Twitter that, “none of that year one batman art circling the web originated from mine or frank’s work. so can’t take credit or blame for it,” which may mean the designs were commissioned by Warner Bros.

 Raymond Frederick Harryhausen
Born: Los Angeles 29th June 1920
Died: London 7th May 2013.

The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, Visual Effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator. He was a multi-award winner which includes a special Oscar and BAFTA. Ray’s influence on today’s film makers was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations.

Harryhausen’s fascination with animated models began when he first saw Willis O’Brien’s creations in KING KONG with his boyhood friend, the author Ray Bradbury in 1933, and he made his first foray into filmmaking in 1935 with home-movies that featured his youthful attempts at model animation. Over the period of the next 46 years, he made some of the genres best known movies – MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949), IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA (1955), 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH (1957), MYSTERIUOUS ISLAND (1961), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966), THER VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969), three films based on the adventures of SINBAD and CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981). He is perhaps best remembered for his extraordinary animation of seven skeletons in JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963) which took him three months to film.

Harryhausen’s genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray’s hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so.

Today The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation, a charitable Trust set up by Ray on the 10th April 1986, is devoted to the protection of Ray’s name and body of work as well as archiving, preserving and restoring Ray’s extensive Collection.

Tributes have been heaped upon Harryhausen for his work by his peers in recent years.

“Ray has been a great inspiration to us all in special visual industry. The art of his earlier films, which most of us grew up on, inspired us so much.” “Without Ray Harryhausen, there would likely have been no STAR WARS”
George Lucas.

“THE LORD OF THE RINGS is my ‘Ray Harryhausen movie’. Without his life-long love of his wondrous images and storytelling it would never have been made – not by me at least”
Peter Jackson

“In my mind he will always be the king of stop-motion animation”
Nick Park

"His legacy of course is in good hands
Because it’s carried in the DNA of so many film fans."
Randy Cook

"You know I’m always saying to the guys that I work with now on computer graphics “do it like Ray Harryhausen"
Phil Tippett

“What we do now digitally with computers, Ray did digitally long before but without computers. Only with his digits.”
Terry Gilliam.

"His patience, his endurance have inspired so many of us."
Peter Jackson

"Ray, your inspiration goes with us forever."
Steven Spielberg

"I think all of us who are practioners in the arts of science fiction and fantasy movies now all feel that we’re standing on the shoulders of a giant.
If not for Ray’s contribution to the collective dreamscape, we wouldn’t be who we are."
James Cameron

4DX, the amalgam of gimmicks...

The motion, the smells, the moisture, the 3D, and the hot air of 'Iron Man 3' in 4DX.

Attachment 3653

4DX, the amalgam of gimmicks that are unlikely to make it to home theater anytime soon state their case with 'Iron Man 3.' In an article on the Verge, the sensory overload available only in the near Tokyo city of Nagoya is related in full detail. The verdict not unsurprisingly is that some gimmicks work better than others.

For 'Iron Man 3' it starts with 3D conversion, a feature which is aided by the motion sensation derived from moving seats. The immersion felt from the "seats' movement is surprisingly high, and in scenes where Iron Man soars through the air it lends an appreciable level of immersion."

The theater's colored strobe lights also receive high marks and seem to add a little visual shock to each explosion.

On the other hand, haptic feedback receives little love. "One of the first 4DX-enabled events sets the tone: a mysterious plant smolders on screen, and you feel a vibration in your back. This is weird and off-putting, and highlights a major limitation of 4DX — its haptic feedback comes from behind, but all the action happens in front of you."

With the viewer's behind feeling the vibration, the front is left to be blasted with water. That's right, a bar in front of the viewer sprays water in sync with (loosely) aquatic situations onscreen. "Does it really add to the moment to get a faceful when Iron Man falls into the ocean following a helicopter attack?"

The 4DX aroma array is likewise less loved. Regardless of the system's library of scents, the viewer "was only able to distinguish a single one during the entire film, a chemically sweet, metallic odor that seemed to pop up at random."

More effective than water is air, and when timed with onscreen gunfire can be interesting but at a cost. The air jets, situated on either side of the headrest, tend to drown out sound when activated, which quickly hurts any onscreen action.

Ultimately, it would seem that 4DX is a mixed bag, and when considering how appropriate 'Iron Man 3' is, with so much action and cool onscreen suit experiences, "4DX is (still) going to come off to you as little more than a Disneyland ride... If a blockbuster like this isn’t the perfect use case, what is?"
