I know this sounds ignorant but what is a 2.0 setup? Is it just 2 fronts basically? That is what I am looking at doing, just starting with a nice receiver and two fronts. Even though I am going to have to build my system a little at time I still want to get a nice receiver and fronts to start my system. Here's what I have come across so far. These aren't necessarily the places where I would buy them, I haven't narrowed down best prices yet.
Looking for something that I can eventually build into a 7.1 system. Right now I have a PS3, DirecTV HD DVD, and am going to be getting a HD DVD player soon for my catalog selections. My wife wants a Wii, so maybe 4 HDMI inputs in the near future.

Before I get into this, I know a lot of you consider Sony receivers to be craptastic. I have had no problems with Sony in the past, and the receivers fit my budget. So...

I was wondering if I needed this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DH800...8632236&sr=1-5, which has an HD audio decoder built-in. Or, would this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DH700...632270&sr=1-15 suffice, which has HDMI PCM audio only. Will I still get HD audio, as decoded by my BD player? I don't need a gazillion inputs, so the more inexpensive one would be fine. Just wondering about the audio decoding.

Thanks!

Need some help with a new HTPC

I'm moving into a new house in some months, which will give me 10 times the space of my old apartment.

That said, I plan to construct myself a nice home cinema. I already have some of the items I need and already decided on the screen size (11' DIY cinemascope screen).

Now there's still that lack of a proper HTPC, I will need to power my projector.

I want a HTPC that can do more than just scaling some DVDs, so I decided to take the largest HTPC case I could find.

What I'm still unsure: Will a ATI Radeon HD 5770 fit in there?

Those are the case's measurements:

Height: 170 mm
Width: 430 mm
Depth: 500 mm
Weight: 7,850 g

Is that large enough to fit in the above mentioned graphics card?

Another thing I'm looking for closer information would be a HD TV tuner card
.

What's the picture quality like? Is it better or worse than what most standalone receivers do? Will the PVR function need an active internet connection?

The tuner card I was looking at is this Technisat one:

http://www.technisat.com/indexd606.h...ts,en,76-15023

Will this one work with Windows 7?

Last but not least, those are the drives I'm going to use:

1TB HDD
HD-DVD drive (ripped from a MS HD-DVD unit)
Blu-Ray drive

Howdy all! Since I moved out of my parents house back in March I've been working on my own entertainment center since I couldn't stand to be without HDTV. The thing is, as much as I like my Dad's set up (51" 1080i projection TV and a DD 5.1 receiver) I wanted something even better. I started looking at 1080p screens, but again I wanted bigger and better. Of course, like I said, I just moved out on my own. I'm not exactly rolling in dough, but I do okay. Eventually I decided that a big TV wasn't gonna cut it, so I started looking at projectors. I ended up finding I could get a bottom of the line, mediocre 1080p projector for around $1400 if I stopped by Amazon on a good day, or a pretty good 720p projector for $800 to $1000, meaning better contrast, color, everything, just a lower resolution. I decided to go with higher quality, lower res to get started and maybe get a 1080p one in the same class a few years down the road (lo and behold 3 entry level $1000 1080p projectors hit the market this fall!!!). I'm extremely happy with my projector, and even though the resolution isn't the absolute best, the picture can still look quite outstanding projected on my 92" screen across the room, especially on the very best blu-rays and hd dvds. Next up I was stuck with an old 2.0 system. It worked fine and I figured I'd stick with it for a while, but... what can I say, being 21, I have the attention span of... well, a 21 year old. That is to say, an HD-movie and video game addicted 21 year old, something I'm sure everyone here can sympathize with. :)

My girlfriend's parents moved to California, but ended up leaving a lot of stuff back here in Georgia in storage, including, much to my ecstatic discovery when we went through the storage looking for stuff we needed around the house (with her parent's permission), a surround sound system!!! I couldn't have been happier than if a whole buttload of hot chicks started parading naked through the house!

Well, as it turns out, the receiver was a piece of crap, and all the chicks had herpes. Half the speakers didn't receive any sound. I switched things around to make sure it was the receiver and not the speakers. Check. The front left and rear left are dead. The front right only receives about half the signal and fills in the rest with static. The center and rear right work. Most of the time. Sometimes it switched around, much to my chagrin. YAY! The front right and front left are working!!! Crap, the center seems to have gone dead. YAY! The rear left is alive!!! Crap, the rear right and front right have died. Etc. Dead set against putting regular old stereo back in the room I decided to get a new receiver since the speakers all worked fine. The first time I looked at new receivers was a few months ago. I knew I wanted to be able to use Dolby True HD, DTS HD, and PCM uncompressed. Like I said, I want the best I can get. The cheap ones started at $500. Wow. Maybe I'll wait a bit.

I walked into Best Buy the other day; Denon has an entry level uncompressed audio capable surround system for $350. Sold.

So now I have the sound system. I know my visual pretty much backwards and forwards. Audio I'm a little squiffy on. I know better than to buy cables from the jerks at Best Buy (I asked the sales guy ONE question and he assumed I was a total sucker. BTW, after reading the manual to my new sound system, he was WRONG! Lesson learned). So now I have two 25ft HDMI cables on the way. I'm ALMOST there! I swear I might explode.

Now my cables are going to be here in a few more days, MAYBE even tomorrow in time for STAR TREK! :D

I got a Denon AVR-590. It's a 5.1 system, with the ability to expand with another amp to 7.1, but for now the way the room is set up, 5.1 is perfect, and I decided on a 5.1 system anyway because most of my movies are 5.1 DDHD DTSHD or PCM. Only a few action movies have the 7.1, so in that sense, 5.1 works too.

I've studied online, and I know my old fatass PS3 cannot bitstream the audio to make my little DDHD and DTSHD lights light up on my sound system. I'll cope with that as soon as I hear some sexy bass and other fantastic sound coming through the speakers. I know to set my PS3 to convert the sound inside and send it by Linear PCM. My question is (and I know I took a long time getting here for someone who started by talking about how short an attention span I have) when I go to the menu to FINALLY change my audio cable from an old red and white stereo cable to a nice and shiny new HDMI cable, should I just go for the automatic set up or the manual one? As anyone who has gone through this before me knows, and as I know, since I've been looking through the menus lately, if you choose manual, it gives you a whole list of different types of PCM 5.1 and 7.1 to choose from. I've looked through my receiver's manual, and it does mention PCM capability, but not all these different variations. I don't know which out of all the different kHz rates I should select. Should I just pick auto? My PS3 and sound system will soon be connected by a big, long HDMI cable. Will the two of them just get wild and crazy, electronically speaking, and figure out what works between them? Or will it just take a wild guess? Also, what is AAC? It's right beneath regular old lossy DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. I've also noticed while tinkering and playing around with the settings as I wait impatiently for the cables to suitably implement them to arrive that as I go down the list checking them off, if I check a higher kHz rate of the same format, the lower kHz rate version grays out. Am I to assume this means that if my system supports, for example, Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 192 kHz, it grays out the 48 and 96kHz versions because they are lesser and therefore must be supported as well?

Also scary is that after selecting everything and moving to the next page the system flashes me a warning that I should be careful, because if my system does NOT support these frequencies, I may damage my speakers!!! Like I said, the speakers are fine. Actually, they're quite nice! Not sure why they were with such a crappy receiver, but maybe my girlfriend's step father doesn't know crap about audio... i.e. your speakers are only as good as the sound going into them from the receiver.

This is very difficult for me... I had finally gotten to a point where I completely understood my Dad's home theater and my home theater, and now I've found a whole new batch of technology fresh out of the oven... and I'm lost.

Anyone with a PS3 and a similar set-up that knows what to set the PS3 to as well as my sound system or anyone that can offer helpful tips would be greatly appreciated! I'm so close to my ultimate (almost, I'll get 1080p one day! :) ) home theater system I'm almost ready to explode!!! Help me! I won't give up!!!

New subwoofer build for a friend....

Not a big console gamer, but I went to a friend's house with another friend last night. Both of them are big into PS3 gaming and are always bickering back and forth (puke). Anyways, the guy who's house were at has a sweet setup for gaming (Optoma HD20, 110" screen, Energy 7.1 surround system, PS3, Xbox 360). Pretty cool. He was running an Energy 10" that he got from FutureShop for like a grand (http://www.energy-speakers.com/na-en...-v10-overview/). Sounded ok, not that impressive to use DIY-ers, obviously.

Anyways, upon leaving, I could tell my other buddy wasn't at all happy with his setup so I got to talking with him about beefing up his low end DIY-style. This got him all excited, of course and I said I would look into it. He's not rich, but there is NO WAF, no size limitations, but only a $350 budget. Wood is free, parts, terminals, labour, etc etc is also free. So basically $350 for amp and driver. I got to thinking about making an SDX10 in a 12" sonotube, maybe 60-70L, tuned to 21hz with a BASH300. Possible? Would it sound any good? This is strictly for gaming and some movies, but I'd like to go as low and clean as possible...

That was the initial thinking....

Another guy on AVS contacts me and has a Shiva-X 12" driver for CHEAP ($150 CDN). This is a legendary driver with 27mm xmax!!! One-way! Talk about displacement. So we grab that. 300W is not nearly enough to make the Shiva dance, so we get the HPSA 540W plate amp. Officially, we're over budget (by about $100). No matter, he is still happy.

So the build got finalized. 200L "LLT-type" down-firing sonosub, tuned to 18hz. For those that have never heard (felt) REAL bass, even this mini LLT would blow your mind.....

Hey all,

I'm a proud owner of a very nice Stereo set-up and I own a Sony BDP-S350 blu ray player. Here's the thing. I don't want to switch over to a surround sound setup right now, but I want to make sure I'm hearing the best sound possible on my 2 speaker setup. Right now I've got my S350 hooked up via analog red 'n white connectors to my Harman Kardon 3380.

Since pretty much every blu ray out there has a 5.1 track and not a dedicated 2.0 track I'm asking you how to setup my blu ray player to output a nice 2.0 mix.

In the audio setup page on the S350 I found an option 'downmix' which I can set to 'dolby surround' or 'normal'. I'm pretty sure this option should downmix the 5.1 tracks on the discs to a 2.0 track but I'm not sure I'm hearing any difference.

I think that I'm hearing the left and right front speaker channels right now
and not a 2.0 downmix.

Does anyone have any kind of advice for me?

I'm looking into buying a new monitor which will be for gaming, movies, and general computer use. Right now it appears that until OLED comes out in a few years, LED backlighting is the best thing to go with. The BenQ V2400 Eco fits that bill and I've had a good history with the few BenQ products I've had in the past. It's also about 300 bucks so it fits my price range. Any experience with this monitor? find any detailed reviews?

I'd love to get some advice before I make a decision. Thanks for your input!

California Decision Could Limit HDTV Choices Nationwide

On Nov. 18 the California Energy Commission is scheduled to vote on a proposal that would require retailers by 2011 to limit sales of TV sets to those that consume about a third less power than they do today.

Since the public hearing on Oct. 3, industry groups have turned up the volume in opposition to the new guidelines. If passed, the best value in home theater HDTVs will disappear from California shelves and, some analysts figure, will ultimately cut consumer choices across the country.

The Consumer Electronics Association says the current CEC proposal would ban the sale in California of 100 percent of plasma sets larger than 60 inches and 25 percent of all today's large screen HDTVs.

For home theater enthusiasts, plasma offers the best value per square inch in screen sizes over 50 inches. A similarly sized, energy efficient LED TV, costs twice as much as a plasma television. Today, a 50-inch Samsung plasma HDTV can be had online for under $1,200, and the largest LED HDTV by Samsung at that same price is only 32 inches.
I think it's screwed up that plasma's have become more energy efficient, but they are not getting credit for being more improved.

Hi all. I just moved into a house for the first time and think i need to get a new receiver to allow me to set up my tv and components the way I need to. My current receiver is an older sony that only allows hdmi pass-thru. What i need now is a receiver that will take all inputs (mostly hdmi and component) and output HDMI video and sound to my televison, which will be connected to my receiver via a 20 ft hdmi cable. (I am mounting the TV above a fire place and need to minimize cabling as much as possible.)

I'm also on a tight budget. I dont need alot of frills and im honestly probably going to us my TVs speakers for sound, atleast for the forseable future )to reduce visible cabling).

Could you guys suggest a good, reliable, receiver that will meet my needs?

Thanks!

Samsung 50" plasma, PN50b650

My old DLP is giving up the ghost for the third time and I'm tired of throwing money at it. Normally I'd like to do research myself, but I'm finding that I'm hitting a brick wall with the attributes that are really important to me. So, hopefully, those who follow TVs really well can help me out.

My #1 requirement is a matte screen. A glossy screen is a deal-breaker. Even the models with anti-reflective coating don't cut it. I have a very bright room and I'm not going to change that. The difficulty I have is that most sellers don't bother to identify which are glossy and which are matte.

#2 requirement, and related to #1, is that the TV has to be capable of getting fairly bright.

Nice-to-have-but-NOT-required are:
Ability to accept PAL signals
Frame interpolation (smooth motion or whatever they call it)
Very black blacks
Netflix streaming
ATSC tuner

Looking for 40"-50" size, 1080p, with mid-range quality and price. I don't like the cheap stuff and I can't afford the top range stuff.

I don't mind older models provided they are available new and meet my requirements. I can definitely can wait till holiday or superbowl sales.
