whoa!
i am into this big time.
i need the shelf space and 550 is not bad for a player that does both at 1080p at this rate anyway.

I'm gonna get one. No question. The more choice in titles I have the better. Which is kind of the point as far as I'm concerned.

The only way I get one is if it's HDMI1.3 and it bitstreams Dolby TrueHD, DD+, and DTS HD Master Audio. If it doesn't do all that, then it's junk!!

I don't think it's going to be $550. Depending on how you read the articles on the web, some have it as $550. But others have it at $550 more than the typical blu-Ray player. So, it could be $550, plus $500 for more than $1,000.
I look forward to seeing an official announcement. Hopefully sometime this month. -

Dual players (once cheap enough) will frustrate the hell out of Sony and Microsoft and their stupid format war. People will just buy which ever format they can get their hands on, without worrying about it.
Im looking forward to them releasing this machine and more, because once they become standard people wont have to worry about what format to invest in.
Im certainly going to get one, once their cheap enough, or atleast cheaper then buying two seperate machines.
Dual players = end to confusion. -

I know this is mean to say. BUT. Among MANY reasons I want this to come out and be a great player. One reason I want it to come out, is because my theory is that once it's out, there should be less people being complete morons with what they post in the smackdown forum. I mean, to me, the only reason to post in the smackdown, is out of fear. People post there, in an attempt (weak as they may be) to convince the "other side" that they have the better format. Kind of like "my dad can beat up your dad", back when we were kids. Not to mention, I'm sure there are many kids in this forum.
If there is a player that can handle both formats flawlessly, then what would be the point of having to prove you have the better format. I'm hoping that a dual player will EXTEND this format war. Because people will just buy the movies they want, and the versions they want.
IMHO, the longer this format war goes on, the lower the prices will go, and the better content that will be added to the discs. With no competition, the winner of the format war would have less reason to spend tons of money to perfect the format.
Do you REALLY think "the fifth element" would have been re-issued, had HD-DVD dropped dead by now? I doubt it. Maybe in the future, but not this soon.
IMHO, without the format war, Pirates would not have added so many extra features, 300 would not be getting Web-enabled content, BD-J would not be out this year, the PS3 would not be dropping it's price soon, the Toshiba would not have reduced it's price permanently, Amazon and Microsoft would not be offering high def independant films, etc.
Is this bad for the retailers? sure. But is it bad for the fans? No. Not if a dual player can be had for a good price, with great functionality.
Just think of all those people who want high def movies, but are waiting for a winner in this format war. Well, with a great dual player, there's really no longer a need to wait (if affordable). IMO.
PS. I think somebody should start a similar thread in the "general discussion" forum. I think they get more traffic. -

You know I agree with you completely. Half those posts I dont think anyone could ever tell you the true reasons. Personally I am a movie buff and I care about movies on both sides. And IMO if you can only keep your mind narrowed to one format then I dont see how anyone can be a true "movie buff". To me this is my answer to owning both King Kong and Casino Royal, Matrix and Pirates.
And going beyond movie lovers, I am an IT guy and imo anything new that comes out I think has its uses in some form or another. Sure BD offers more space, but they are upping the HD capacity as well. And this extra space is ONLY needed for the IT industry not the Home video market.
Thats exactly right. One way to think of it is like this as well. For you history buffs out there... Look at the cold war. Everything the States did to try and beat the Soviets was to "win the race". And from this cold war, we now have things like Desktop computers, Laptops, cell phones, PDAs, pocket sized calculators, and not to mention going to the moon. And although this is no where nearly as big as the cold war, in some way it is very similar. I cant imagine no one in here would like to maybe see a THX certified Pioneer Elite Hybrid Blu-ray HD-DVD player with a Reon chip, full HDMI 1.3 with bitstream support, 1080 @ 60p and 24p output with Lip Sync and Deep color support for 100 bucks.IMHO, the longer this format war goes on, the lower the prices will go, and the better content that will be added to the discs. With no competition, the winner of the format war would have less reason to spend tons of money to perfect the format.
You are probably right, Sony wouldnt have but they still need to re-release a few others on Blu-ray too. (XXX HOFD, 50 First Dates) I think the only reason why they just did that one was because that received the most complaints from people.Do you REALLY think "the fifth element" would have been re-issued, had HD-DVD dropped dead by now? I doubt it. Maybe in the future, but not this soon.
IMHO, without the format war, Pirates would not have added so many extra features, 300 would not be getting Web-enabled content, BD-J would not be out this year, the PS3 would not be dropping it's price soon, the Toshiba would not have reduced it's price permanently,Last edited by JU1CYFRU1T; 07-08-2007 at 03:01 PM. Less than $600??
I'm not sure if this site is accurate, or if they have just Miss-read what was announced over-seas (that the price will be $550 more than a typical Blu-ray player), but if it's true, I will certainly be getting one. I'd like to see it for $400, but I'm not expecting miracles. $600 would be an incredible price "If it is fully functional".
http://www.tvpredictions.com/samsung070507.htm
I've been looking around on the net, and every other site shows it at $600, and every other-other site has it for $550 more than a typical Blu-ray Player.
Here's hoping for the $600 option. -

Nothing is official right now, and since toshiba just found a way to do the 24p output, i see no reason now for samsung not offering the same.

Oh wow.... a whole area full of people after my own heart. Where were all you guys when I was in the smackdown forum evangelizing dual format players to the Blu-ray fans?
I still can't believe that they are against it. That's a whole psychology paper right there...
Seriously though, dual format players are the future, and you're going to see the format war fade off into irrelevance without a clear victor being declared. It might even seem quaint. I couldn't justify getting a Blu-ray player for $500+, but if this Samsung dual-player comes out for less than $600, I'm seriously going to have to consider it. It almost seems too good to be true.
Even if it's priced out of reach, this is only the end of the first year. Next year I think combo players are going to be common, and there will be a few entry level offerings that have all of the functionality of this one.LG GGC-H20L Super Multi Blue Blu-ray & HD DVD ROM Drive

If I can get a 'universal player' for ~$600, I may have to bite. Of course, I will have to wait for a few reviews, but if all is well... hello dual format.
I guess I will have to give my A1 to my in-laws. Then I can get them to add HD DVD to their Netflix account (that we share), and start seeing some of these 'Rental only' reviewed movies.JU1CYFRU1T
