I'm looking forward to hearing if:
. selecting Dolby TrueHD now results in 5.1 surround sound being fed to optical digital out (it sounds like this is now fixed . .)
- and
. if 4:3 source material is not automatically stretched to 16:9.
Thanks.

My player isn't updating....... How do you reset the player again? That worked last time....

Nevermind....Firmware via ethernet is not up yet.

I have mine going thru optical and I get 5.1 with TrueHD & DTS-HD now
tested so far: Batman Begins, Day after Tomorrow, Italian Job, Sky Captain, and Sunshine, plus some others

I noticed the audio drop down menu is alittle different as well

I have never had a problem with 4:3 being stretched on old B&W movies
Check your TV, maybe its set to auto wide??

I am happier than a pig in S....... with this update
it even seems to load quicker........

My TV is set correctly (it works perfectly with my upconverting dvd player & hd-dvd player) so maybe I misunderstood the problem. Your report sounds very encouraging! Thanks.
Hmmmm:
- find a BD-UP5000 - and unload my HD-A30, or
- keep the HD-A30 and look for a new model 1500

Samsung doesn't deem this as a problem...I think it will require just a few more complaints (it seems to be gaining some traction as it was acknowledged by a CSR earlier today).

Show me my post where I said this player is garbage? I am not selling it off because of its perceived value to other people. $200-$250??? Yeah, for that, I'd keep it...and I will.

Not exactly garbage but you pretty much wrote it off before May even ended.

Well, yeah, but when I said "I'm done with this crap" I wasn't referring to the player as crap, simply the entire situation of the player not being updated, the movie quality being subpar. As for the machine, I believe it is the machine to have if your into hi-def simply for the fact that it plays everything.

You can't upscale to anything over 480p with DVD's that are 4:3 without the player stretching the image. If you set the resolution of your player to 480p, the movies do not get stretched. What good does that do us?? None. But at least you can watch DVD's without them being stretched OR upconverted.

Yes - I have complained to them personally over the phone also - but they told me it wasn't a problem either. They said I have to change the setting on my TV when I want to watch a 4:3 movie using their model 5000 player. I told them I had an easier solution - just don't buy one of their high definition players and no changes to my TV are necessary at all since it works perfectly with every other player I've ever used.
Based on what I've read about the model 1500, they seem to now offer an additional video setting which corrects this problem in that model, so maybe someone is listening somewhere and there is hope for the 5000 someday - if Samsung ever puts out another firmware update.

Oh, they're bound to...since this latest firmware reverted to an old bug causing 24fps flickering on all Paramount HD DVDs. I will file my complaint tomorrow on this topic.

It's still early days but all the audio dropouts I heard previously (some of those being the same problematic Paramount titles) are history.
