I was kinda counting on this one.

I've been hoping for a dual player that would at least be BD Bonus View along with bitstreaming audio.

Curious, i've heard the talk of Bonus View and Bitstreaming coming to the Samsung 5000 but is there talk of the same coming to the LG 200?

wow weee looks like its going to be harder and harder to keep playing those hd dvds. LG will be next to cancel their dual players. Next we will see signal detectors for anyone still using hd dvd implemented so that once you turn it on it will zap your player, rendering all your hd dvd movies into scratchable coasters, lmao

Shocking news!

Soon we will be finding out that they much-anticipated miracle firmware fix for the 5000's audio deficiencies will never be coming either. Would you really be surprised by that either?

Not sure about Bitstreaming but LG has been saying that the LG BH200 would be Profile 2 via firmware update in the spring

Well, this totally sucks. I think I'm actually going to bail on the HD market altogether.

Because of no Samsung 5500? That's pretty silly. There are so many alternatives for being a dual format owner.

I know, but I really don't want to add on another game console or standalone player-- and I'm not that crazy about the Xbox 360 add-on that I do have. I just want something that handles both formats, works as advertised and is reliable-- and isn't going to break the bank. I'll probably break down and get a PS3 at some point, but I find it depressing how HD-DVD consumers not only got the shaft from the studios, but from the manufacturers as well.

I'm considering bailing altogether on the HD-DVD market as well. I have some discs I really wanna keep, but I am afraid Samsung may not continue with teh firmware.

Considering that the 5000s issues lay mostly with Blu-ray I would consider that one if you are looking for a Dual format player. I have too many titles to go back now and repurchase. Give it some time, I believe that Samsung will focus on the 5K since they see it as a good segway into Blu-ray for those HD DVD supporters (and have said so publicly).

If you dont have that many movies I can maybe see something, but anyone with more than 20 titles I think its just a waste (IMO). Just consider the cost of replacing the titles that you get rid of, to me its not worth it. I have a few duplicates that I am selling, but for the large part I am keeping all of my HD DVDs. Much like Laserdisc even though they are not made anymore you can still find players that work years later.

TO comment on the OT, I cant say that I am surprised. I think Samsung will keep the 5K and focus the rest on Blu-ray. they will use and market the 5K to those HD DVD owners with large collections and or those who do not want to play both formats with 1 player.

^Finally, some sensibility in this thread from none other than the moderator. If Samsung prematurely abandons the 5000, they risk facing more bad press in the form of a new/enhanced lawsuit (and this includes reneging on at least the bitstreaming of DD+/DTS-MA/multi-channel TrueHD).
