Default Future of Combo Players!

Now that the war is almost over with, do you guys think that the prices of combo players will drop sooner than we think?

Do you guys also think that Samsung and LG will still release combo players in the future?

I think that all depends on what Toshiba, Uni and Para do in the near future.

Yeah, if I can't get a decent combo player that won't break the bank, I'm seriously thinking of bagging the entire HD circus altogether.

I hope that we still will see combo players in the future. But I wouldn't doubt if they do continue to make them, look at the Beta/VHS combo players, DVD/VHS combo players. I hope that this stays true with HD DVD and Blu-ray combos. I would love to pick up the Samsung UP5500 when it releases.

As would I, I don't have the room for two players and a console. So if I can get one player that does it all, with all the movies I have.

With luck I'd have to wait another month or so, and a hopefull BB coupon for another 12% off so I can get the 5000. I'd wait till the 5500 but not knowing the full specs of it...kinda has me in a bind and the rumored 6500 which will take place of the 5000.....IF that comes out.

3 choices and it comes down to timing a funds for it.

Same here, I think I will snatch up the 5500 as soon as it hits the market. I want to give it a test run first and if all is well, I will sell my A3 and PannyBD30 to help fund the 5500. I've run out of HDMI between the 360, PS3, and 2 Hidef movies players.

I'm guessing Samsung and LG will no longer produce combo players. Why would they? I will be keeping mine since there are a few HD-DVD's I really like that arent available on Blu yet. When all of my HD-DVD's come out on Blu, I'll dump the player and HD-DVD's and be Blu again.

When hd dvd fails nobody's going to make combo players anymore. They never really got off the ground to start with.

LG stated at CES '08 that they would continue to make combo players.

It actually makes me laugh that people panic or even think no combo players will be made. It's technology. Every player will eventually play both formats. The sheer notion that HD_DVD never really got off the ground it also silly. Millions of people own it. The entire war was just that; to push and shove until one took over. I see Toshiba continuing on with HD-DVD as a blank HD media source and people will use those disks to burn some of their HD content and there will have to be players for it.

Just like there was a time when SD players only played just that, then they became capable of playing DVD-+R, etc, I think all players will play both formats in the coming months. If you prefer to pretend it's the last we will ever see of HD players, go for it. I own both formats, I enjoy both formats, I will continue to snatch up great deals on both formats, and don't fear the reaper is going to take all HD technology away.

Someone said in another post that Samsung was going to pull out of the game, don't know how true that is but hopefully we can get confirmation.

I would say 99% that the 5500 just got discontinued before it ever came out. There will NOT be a dual future anymore. That is for certain.

I hope we hear soon, I would hope that the 5500 is their final one at the most.

That was before Toshiba made its announcement. Universal was 100% HD-DVD...right up until this morning. LG and Samsung will not make combo players anymore, its a rediculous thought to think that they would. If HD-DVDs aren't going to be made, then why would we need a combo player? Supply and demand. No demand, no need for supply.
