Default just got Samsung 5000- mixed bag

Just received 5000 from Crutchfield
First of all, it is a shiny beauty.
Second, it will NOT decode TrueHD thru analog to 5.1 surround.
I mutiple discs: Order of the Phoenix, Spiderman, Iwo Jima
you only get Stereo.
Samsung says firmware in the future will fix this.
I will believe it when I see it.
Samsung Tech support not very helpful at all.

It will NOT play BluRay Chicago, or BluRay Pixar Shorts
Stopped in the middle of BluRay Spiderman 3 but was able to skip
chapter and finish movie.

I am currently using only 720p and picture is like 1080i over Verizon
FiOs.

I probably will send it back to Crutchfield who have been great helping me
as always.

This isn't much of a shock, given how many knocks Samsung is taking over their BR players, like Amazon limiting returns to 2 per customer before a mandatory refund!

HD DVD seems to have been better, but not much. While there aren't any products that brick with the frequency of the Samsung 1400, the failure rate is still higher than most consumer products, judging by the traffic on this board. And even when the hardware is copacetic, it still took until v 2.7 (and 10 months or so) before all the features on the XA2 actually worked.

Samsung cramming their first HD DVD into a platform with BluRay is just a recipe for early adopter pain. This is complex technology, it's going to take a while.

I want one, but I thing I'll hang on to my XA2 for another 6 months or until it looks like the 5000 is stable. Who knows, maybe some hot 1.1 BD players with HDMI 1.3 will come out at CES for <$300 street and I'll just pick one of them up. The XA2 is awfully awesome.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the 1200 isn't top of the time, nor was it ever.

I bought the 5000. Too many glitches.
PQ looks good. Blacks a bit crushed.
Very quirkly. Won't play some titles.
I am trying out a Panny 30/Toshiba A35 combo. Happy so far.

Well if you love AVSFORUM so much...why do you come here to spread their crap? I OWN the player, I'm not going by what those noobs say. I know first hand that every BD I own plays perfectly and so do my HD-DVD's. But then again, I'm not out to spread false crap about Samsung.

How many discs do you own? You have had a chance to check every single one already?

I'm not spreading false information. I have reported my own testing experience. The Official BD-UP5000 Owner's Thread at avsforum is 1,694 posts long as of now. They are definitely not noobs. Since you own the player (or did you sell it on ebay?) go watch your movies and be happy for yourself.

Yeah, Come on now, I second that. You shouldn't be so quick to get defensive about your own investment. I notice you don't even have a receiver or surround sound yet. So you've been watching HiDef movies in stereo so far? Everybody has there own reasons for owning it. I'm sure the Samsung 5k plays all the movies you have just fine.
What I and other people find most disturbing is the advertised audio specs are not coming to life here. It was suppose to decode TrueHD and HD MA thru analog to 7.1 surround. Now we all have to wait til April to find out if this will really happen? Many of use already own both format players, receiver with speakers, and are looking for the answer to our prayers that this one can do both formats and all the audio codecs internally. This WAS suppose to be IT!!! Dam U Sammy!!!
I actually bought one of these yesterday. It is still in the box sealed and after all that I have read it isn't doing gets me upset because those were the reason why I bought the machine. Now I don't know what to do with it. I can't keep it because if it can't do PCM uncompressed and TrueHD through 7.1 analog in april I can't return it then. So do I trust Samsung with there weak Hi Def player support or forget it until something proving comes along?

I went through the same struggle as you but ended up returning it within the 30 day window. It would be great to have one machine to do both formats but for me it was more important to have lossless audio. I was ready to make the switch from sd to hd/bd in September but ended up waiting until I could get this combo player. I actually got one from the first batch in mid-December and am glad I returned because there's no way I could have waited until April for the proper audio codecs!

I purchased my first 5.1 home theater in 1995 to take advantage of DD and DTS on laserdiscs. Making the switch to Lossless audio gave me that wow factor that I remembered from way back then when I first heard surround sound in my living room. In my opinion Lossless is a HUGE step up over standard dolby digital and dts. I've done a/b comparisons between lossy and lossless audio tracks on bd/hd and can't believe the difference! I hear so much more sounds that aren't on the lossy tracks. Especially ambience sounds. The soundtrack also sounds more full and enveloping.

In short... hell no you don't trust them! I'm totally with you on the whole post. But I can't see any reason to get a 5000 at this time. I wouldn't buy one until the firmware has been released and confirmed to do what has been promised, otherwise I'd at least wait until the 5500 is released.
