Default New LG BH200 player, due in mid-October in the United States

The new LG player, due in mid-October in the United States, includes features that were omitted from the original. LG says it is capable of Blu-ray disc and HD DVD playback with advanced BD-Java and HDi technology. LG was criticized in the technology press for not fitting its first dual player with HDi, or high-definition interaction interactivity, which enables HD DVD consumers to use interactive menus and extra features

The player will support various A/V formats including MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 video, MPEG1/2 audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS and DTS-HD audio. Also expect plenty of inputs/outputs including HDMI 1.3 out and a LAN Ethernet port for network interactivity.

You won’t have to wait too long for this one. The unit will hit shelves in mid-October for $999.

They do seem to have that vhs look to them. Price is a bit ugly as well considering you could get a hd dvd and blu-ray stand alone for less than the cost of this latest offering by LG.

LG was the first company to come out with an HD DVD/Blu-ray combo player--the LG BH100--which made a big splash at CES 2007 and won CNET's "Best in Show" award. At CEDIA today, LG announced its second combo player, the BH200, which looks to improve on many of the shortcomings of the BH100. The most significant failing of the BH100 was its limited support for the interactive features available on HD DVD discs, also known as HDi. According to the press release, the BH200 will support HDi functionality, along with network-enhanced HD DVD features, available on some discs such as Blood Diamond. On the Blu-ray side, it should also support BD-Java functionality (as seen on the newer Pirates of Caribbean discs), as well as picture-in-picture functionality. (While picture-in-picture functionality is standard on all HD DVD players, it is not required on Blu-ray players until October 31.)

LG BH200's key features

Full HDi support on HD DVD discs
Picture-in-picture support for both HD DVD and Blu-ray
1080p output at 24 frames per second
Onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD
HDMI 1.3 output, with Deep Color support
Ethernet port
$1,000 list price, mid-October release date

Of course, with a $1,000 list price, you can buy both the PlayStation 3 and Toshiba HD-A2 for less than the BH200, but you won't get the convenience of a single player. The price is definitely too high for the average consumer, but the BH200 could be popular in the enthusiast community, depending on the specifics of its functionality. For example, the press release doesn't mention support for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio--either via onboard decoding or bitstream output--but we have to imagine there will at least be two-channel Dolby TrueHD support, since that is required in the HD DVD specification and the BH200 features the official HD DVD logo.

The BH200 will also have to compete with Samsung's combo player, the BD-UP5000 ($1,000), which has a very impressive feature set including HQV upconversion (which can improve both DVD and high-definition disc playback performance), 1080p/24 output, and what looks to be support for all of the high resolution audio formats, including DTS-HD Master audio--although it will take a firmware update before DTS-HD Master Audio is enabled.

We've contacted LG regarding some technical questions about the BH200's high resolution audio capabilities, whether it meets Blu-ray profile 1.1 and its exact connectivity, and we will update this post if we receive more information.

Does this mean it will be Blu-ray Profile 2 upgradable ?

LG’s BH200 Super Blu Player ($999) is the second-generation dual-format player from LG, and unlike the first-gen model, the new player has the capability to handle interactive features of both formats including BD-Java, BD-Live (due next summer) and HDi. The LG BH200 outputs 1080p video resolution at 24-, 30- and 60 frames per second.
Since it will have BD-Java, BD-Live and 1080p24. Also it can do PIP for HD DVD so it should do it for Blu-ray.

LG BH200 vs. Samsung BD-UP5000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK. So have a little problem trying to decide on which one to eventually get. Does anyone already know of the pros and cons of each of these machines? I was actually about to buy the LG BH200 tonight, but found out that Samsung was putting out a machine like pretty quick here.

Any info would be great!!

Which would you get and why? Stylish looks aside, which is supposed to perfom better?

Thanks.

Last I heard the Samsung BD-UP5000 won't be out till mid to late December, they keep delaying it, so I guess it depends on how long you want to wait.

If you have to choose, go with Samsung. LG repair sucks, if you ever have to have it repaired. I've never owned a Samsung product, but I'd just rather go with them. My LG LCD has screwed up so much and I just don't care for their stuff anymore.

I was testing the LG BH200 earlier tonight. It had long load times and it also took a long time to open the disc tray, it could have been a fluke but it didn't warrant a purchase from me. I'll wait until the BD-UP5000 comes out.
