two questions:

When?

How much?

I think the best bet is still a laptop unless this thing can do something amazing.

Well, if you don't want to buy your entire library on DVD and BD, then yes, it's needed for people that have/want entertainment systems in their cars or on flights etc.

I don't think the important thing to look at is whether it will look great on a small screen, more so that you can use your Blu Ray discs on the go, and then when you're at home, connect it to the big HDTV, and hopefully the quality of the player is good enough to work as a feasible Blu player as well.

At the kind of viewing distance you watch a portable movie player, I guess some quality improvement would be noticeable over 480p, but as others said already - compatibility with your BD collection is the main point.

That, and the fact that you can use it as a standalone player too is pretty cool. Must cost a lot though.

I wonder about the reasoning behind this. Last year HD DVD had portable HD players and a car player. I don't see the point for blu with that small a screen. especially in the car (as hd had done).

I would actually replace my PS3 for that BD/VHS combo player. I have a lot of VHS movies and old home movies (mostly from my childhood) that haven't been converted digitally. I'd probably consider getting a set for my parents.

As some stated is more to do with people who have BD collections to be able to take them anywhere trips, etc and still watch their BD movies. Its not so much with PQ on a small screen.

Right now if we went on a trip I would be SOL because I do not have a portable BD player to enjoy my movies on if I so choose. I can only enjoy them at home.

There are still some movies that I own on VHS that I like, that haven't been released on Bluray yet. I could get them on DVD since they have been released on it, but there's no point since they ought to be released on Bluray within the next 4 years (probably sooner). There are also a few movies that I love that I'm thinking of buying on VHS since they still haven't been released on even DVD yet.

I might seriously think about the combo player for my room if the price is right.

I remember reading about this awhile back....could see a handful of people with them upfront. If Blu-ray ever becomes the "standard", I could see those players being more prevalent.
