Default Blu-ray Interactivity demo at CES w/Fox

Interesting stuff!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/l...activity-demo/

Here's some choice excerpts:

Quote:
11:52 - VP of ad Don Eckland takes the stage and joins the panel. Says that 2008 will take it to a new level because the network connection and make it a more powerful device. Will be able to trigger ringtone from disc to a phone. Portable copy will be included for PS3 on a disc and games. Don waits, Lineard makes jokes about replicating. They are sending a Godzilla ring tone to a "shills" mobile phone -- Lineard knows all the lingo. Now they are coping to a PS3, but Don seems to have forgot the password. They are welcoming everyone on sprint or Verizon to come get a Godzilla ring tone afterwards.
Quote:
12:04pm - Danny Kaye VP of Fox takes the stage. They're trying to merge BD-J with social networking and other online interactivity. Says that they also own MySpace and it could be really big with BD Live. Can store interactive activity and relive it again, or create custom trailers for friends. Now we are going to insert ourselves into Alien Vs Predator. So after we get a photo we are going to choose our role and skills, so we can interact with others through the film, in a role playing game. Now we're watching the demo of Alien Vs. Predator Vs. You -- looks cool, but wonder how much fun it will be with a remote. "The future is blu, the future is BD Live." The whole idea is to extend the movie experience from two hours to 10 more more hours of fun.
Quote:
12:12pm - Ron Schwartz from Lionsgate takes the stage. We are going to be invited into a commentary of SAW 4. now everyone can engage in the conversation. Now we are watching Molog, or movie log, that allows us to interact. Demo isn't going so great, they can seem to sign in - again. Lineard starts talking up SAW 4 to help pass the time. Now we can finally see what the box looks like, but we're not sure how they can enter data so fast with that remote, the comments are just flying. This is a commercial ready disc available in two weeks.
Quote:
12:19PM - Don comes back on the stage to wrap things up with a surprise. Now they are downloading a HD video from online featuring Will Smith. Can download new trailers or other new features for the disc. Will looks good in HD and talks up his new movies, as well as Men In Black on Blu-ray.

And you know what? HD-DVD has had all those features from the beginning. Welcome to 2006 Blu-Ray. It took you long enough to get here. Oh wait, you arn't here yet.

Yeah, those WB IME titles were awesome... too bad they won't be making any more of them for HD DVD. Also, these web-enabled features crush anything that HD DVD has ever done. Welcome to 2008, where HD DVD is undisputedly dead and Blu-ray prevails.

The only thing I see that hasn't been done on HD-DVD is the second-copy feature, which is in the HD-DVD spec. Which frankly, what's the point of copying it onto your PS3? Wake me up when I can put it on my iPod. Otherwise, the movie trailer downloads, ringtones, and social networking features? Been there, done that.

No, it's in the spec for both. It's an AACS function, and BD+ is compatible with it.

That's what they're saying it can do. Maybe not with the iPod specifically, since that's Apple's business, but PCs and other multimedia devices.

I imagine the point is that you then use remote play to stream it to your PSP anywhere you have a WiFi connection.

When HD DVD introduced the "community screening" last fall it got laughed at by all the Blu Ray followers.

Agreed. All of this talk about live features could mean less to me (and I love my movies). Maybe down the road something may spark an interest, but for now it's just a meaningless feature (kind of like those DVD's that you have to put in a computer to access bonus' -Iv'e never bothered with them-)

Not my cup of tea either but if it's something that standard DVD players can't do and if it's promoted in the right way toward the right target audience it could be a big selling feature and help move High Def players into main stream a lot faster.

Put it on Nickelodeon for those younger kids that are just getting into text messaging. Advertise it on MTV for the iPod generation.

It's something like this that will make those people put their DVD upscalers in the closet and go out and buy BD live players.

Care for BD live or not, we really need this to work.

And how does that help me on an airplane, bus, or car where I don't have WiFi? Don't get me wrong, I love remote play as a technology. But they make the assumption that WiFi is everywhere. It's not practical.

But it all doesn't matter now because it's been confirmed that you can transfer the movie from the PS3 to the PSP.

Are you talking about the MP4 copy you can put on your PSP? The real challenge to all this interactivity is to make it fun. I mean games are interactive and there are many that are not fun.
