So, does that mean that currently available PS3s will be 2.0 compatible via a firmware update, or that a future version of the PS3 will be 2.0??

It will be a firmware upgrade for all existing PS3s, just like the Bonus View/Profile 1.1 firmware just released.

2.0 is pretty much 1.1 with internet and more storage space. Both things the PS3 already has. Just needs to be turned on.

All the PS3 is missing to be 2.0 compliant is the software. It has the memory and internet connectivity already.

so it appears that sony is completely skipping the profile 1.1 player and jumping to 2.0
I just hope they keep these at reasonable prices, although with the MSRP 300, 350 and 400 dollars players announced they can't be THAT expensiveRules of Engagement:

Keep your pants on. The show hasn't opened and the BDA keynote isn't until tomorrow. There's at least one other company making an announcement at CES.

Sony BD-Live players not expected until 2H08, but it looks like one of them will have full advanced/lossless decoding on board:
http://www.dvdtown.com/news/sony-new...f-of-2008/5079Sony will continue its line of Blu-ray players until late summer or early fall 2008. The current players do not support profile 1.1 or BD Live.
The company said that two new players are planned to replace the current line-up. The models are dubbed Sapphire 3 and Sapphire 4. Both are similar, but the latter will have more elite audio abilities. They will both support profile 1.1 and BD Live.
