Default With the announcement, Is it REALLY the end of HD DVD?

Does the Warner Blu Ray announcement really spell the end? Will there be like an official announcement that the format is over?

It sure helps to say the least. Yes, Sony should say that at CES. I don't know about you guys, but I'm more anxious for CES than I was before. I am anxious to see what happens at the HD DVD conference. Seriously, maybe they will have some surprises too, doubtful, but it's possible.

I hate to say it as I'm red - but I really hope HD-DVD doesn't have any surprises. If they pull Disney across to neutral or even Fox I think it just complicates things.

The only possible chance they have is for there to be some revelation over the weekend which puts the Warner move into a new light like a time limit on their change but I really doubt this will happen.

The HD-DVD press conference will be painful. Almost as painful as the look on that **** Bill Hunt's face.

I completely agree, I hope HD DVD will just die, Disney going neutral would be a total slap in the face to every HDM consumer, we would definitely be in a stalemate then. I don't think anything will happen, but I would be pissed if it did.

I really think it's the end. I guess people knew it was coming-look at Q1's releases for goodness sakes. Next to nothing was slated for HD.

I think it will be done after CES-there is no way J6P is going to buy a player or even purchase HD DVDs now.

If Warner was paid $450 then surely MS can easily afford $900 to get Fox and Disney to HD DVD. That's going to happen though...

Luckily Im a dual format supporter, so its not a huge issue for me, although I have to admit, am sadened by the news.

I didn't want Blu Ray to win...

I agree with you....I'm a dual format supporter, but just shocked that Warner made this choice so fast considering the fuck up's they have had as of late with some blu ray releases

I presonally think it would now be easier to just concede.
I'll be using my BB gift cards to pick up a PS3 most likely. And when Toshiba is forced to back out next year (or earlier), and prices drop to $100 and under for Closeout players, I will pick one up as a back-up, to avoid making my current collection of HD-DVD's useless (in the event that my other player ever craps out).

And you seriously believe that? Don't be so naive. Both camps were showering Warner with money and clearly Sony simply offered them more.

It doesn't matter, as the war is now over, but it's really rather silly to believe that Warner weren't paid off to willingly see their HDM sales be cut by 1/3.

Couldn't have said it better. IMHO this announcement should put an end to the war. With Blu controlling so many studios now I doubt Uni and Para/DW will continue exclusivity. Obviously Paramount/Dreamworks will have to finish out their contract and I'm unsure if Universal carries any sort of agreement with HD-DVD but I think both studios will either drop HD-DVD or go dual format. HD-DVD may still hang around for a few years but I think today's announcement was the small snowball at the top of a huge hill and WB just started rolling it down the hill.

Now I hope WB re-releases the Blu titles that got the short end of the stick audio wise and either ports over or re-encodes the titles that were exclusive to HD-DVD (Batman Begins, Matrix, V for Vendetta, ect..)

DO NOT count your chickens before they've hatched. CES hasn't even begun yet. Fox has had many issues with their Blu releases...who says they won't go neutral or switch sides? What about all the Disney rumors?

I hope nothing like this happens. I'll be more than happy to set this "war" end but the fat lady ain't singing yet...

I've been HD-DVD all the way. But I honestly think a BD studio going Neutral now, would be terrible for everybody. Because people would have to continue wondering what to buy. And it would give more time for Dowloadable HDM to catch up. And that would be disasterous for both formats.
