Default Sony Q1 2007 Blu-ray Plans

Sony issued their press release for CES a little bit ago:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...-ray_Plans/427

A bit more restrained list of titles, but hey, 'Casino Royale!' Can't wait!!!!

The most interesting nugget in there is Sony's move from MPEG-2 to AVC. Hurray.

Finally, Sony is deciding to move away from MPEG-2!

Where's Bad Boys II?! I really want that...

Casino Royale is going to be a huge seller, maybe the best selling HD title ever.

Thumbs up

I just hope that by "putting their foot in the water," as stated in the article about Sony using AVC, they can get this encoding method done right so that one of their most highly anticipated titles of the year doesn't look like doo-doo (not unlike some of the PQ problems they had with some of their first BD releases and MPEG-2).

Let's cross our fingers in hoping that this becomes one bad-ass reference title.

I would like to see Sony taking a more leading role in releasing Blu-Ray movies.

Kind of the way Universal is leading the way for HD DVD.

instead of being a market leader, Sony is a follower, lots of their titles were delayed, and instead of being a studio with the leading amount of releases, they are squarely behind the middle of the pack.

As an alleged Blu-Ray leader, it would be nicer to see them pushing out more Movies on the format.

The extra's are very overrated. many of us prefer a beautiful transfer, great sound and movie trailer. maybe the director commentary. but to go overboard is missing the point. sometimes, we need to get movies on Blu-Ray so they can win the war.

later on they can come out with the second editions that have the killer extras.

Blu-Ray Movies i own:
Tallageda (uncensored), Total Recall, Christmas Story, Superman 1, 2 & returns, Devil Wears Prada, Monster House, Black Hawk Down, World Trade Center, Full Metal Jacket, Lord Of War & Mission Impossible 3.

It's saying something that the best studio for HD titles on either format is Warners.

That 1 mil number is misleading, too. That's the number of PS3s shipped to retailers. According to Ars Technica:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070108-8574.html

there are still plenty of PS3s in the wild to be had, even in larger metro areas.

If sales don't pick up, my own personal prediction that the PS3 would be a sellout until spring will be proven false.

actually, that statement makes 0 sense. So if they lower their shipments so their sold out till 2008, does that somehow make it better? Cause the way your stating it comes off that way. Its better and better for them to kickup production as high as possible to give all those who want a unit a system, not for them to sit around for 5 months and run out of cash or spend it on a 360 or whatever maybe the case

OMG are you serious? This is the first time I have ever heard of someone actually wishing the syudios to double dip. That is a terrible idea period. I do not want to have the double dip issues that Ihave had to put up with on SD DVD and xtras are important wether you like them or not. That has been proven time and time again in the SD market. Fact is they should do it right the first time or get out of the business. I would never and I mean never support a company that adopted that kind of release strategy on the HD formats. These formats are supposed to be an improvment on the SD DVD market not the other way around and not having xtras is a huge step backwards from last generation. Personally I hope BD doesnt include extras now that I think about it, it will just be another reason to go with HD DVD for the avergae joe.

It should make perfect sense if you read the article I linked to. I initially figured the PS3 would be like the 360 was a year ago, aka high demand, short supply, so there weren't any on shelves until April of 06.

If you read that Ars article, you will see that there are plenty of PS3s just sitting on shelves. Those that are sitting on shelves are part of the one million consoles Sony has shipped. If they are sitting on shelves, they are useless.

That's why sell through numbers are almost always better than shipped numbers.

If they are sitting on shelves unbought, that means that a) they are priced too high or b) there is no demand for them. If that happens, Sony will be in bad shape because they will either have to cut production or price or both. With them already losing $240 on the most profitable configuration, it would be REALLY bad.

Sony have confirmed that all their mid year major titles should be AVC/MPEG-4 encoded.

As for Casino Royale, being day and date with the DVD, I think it will outsell or equal the sales of Pirates, especially if 1 & 2 are being released at the same time on Blu. I think Pirates 1 will sell better than Pirates 2. Pirates 3 later in 2007 will perhaps be the biggy as it will no doubt be day and date.
