Default The most important news from CES

Everything that has been announced so far isn't really anything new.. Both sides are ramping up more movies and new players.. but i think the biggest piece of news is:

Weinstein Co. announced exclusive HD-DVD support.

I've always thought this war will win by software sales and exclusive support. Meaning it'll really win on exclusive support but software sales is what will cause studios to jump ship.

Very impressive news for HD DVD!

I am curious about new line, it is clear that they ahve announced for HD DVD, but I have heard nothing about what their plans are for BD. Maybe we will find out later at the Blu-ray press conference.

If "somehow" New Line becomes exclusive to HD DVD (in the realm of possibility, though I also doubt it for the moment), then HD DVD becomes indispensable (every one wants The Lord of the Rings). Of course, even so I still think both formats would survive in a dual format world.

The Weistein Company has been exclusive to HD-DVD for a long while. That really isn't new news. Besides, they don't have that many titles at the moment.

Are their Miramax movies still under Disney control? (I still hate Disney for screwing them over and taking their stuff)

This is the general vibe I get from HD DVD owners. They are just MUCH more hungry to buy HD movies and studios would benefit greatly from putting movies in that format.

Universal, Warner, Paramount, etc are benefitting greatly from it. I find it mind-boggling that studios would leave money on the table like that.

"The most impressive announcement from CES?"
I think the announced titles from Disney and Fox are both more impressive.

You don't really believe what you typed here do you?
(Also Arthur and the Invincibles' copyright is 2007 MGM studios.)

What back catalog does The Weinstein Company own? Buena Vista retains the Miramax library.

Thank God we can count on BV to issue some sweet PCM on the Miramax releases.

Exactly, jackinbox. The Miramax titles will be Blu-Ray. I think, off the top of my head, The Weinstein Company has maybe 15 to 20 titles total. Of course, when they release more, HD-DVD will get more but they don't have anything to make a dent in the market.

LOL, just a pathetic attempt at making a great, and it is great, announcment for HD-DVD look less important. They are a very big Hollywood studio who will have lots of new releases coming to theatres. This is a studioe that BD doesnt have and even if they dont have a large past library, its still a great studio that is supporting HD DVD and not BD.

Downplay it all you want but this is great news for HD DVD and nothing anyone says from BD can alter that fact.

OC...

It sucks they had to give Disney their Miramax movies. Disney did NONE of the leg work on those films. That's B.S.

And I know the Weinstein's rep as assholes, but Disney are just greedy, heartless asses.

I wish Pixar would've left their sorry asses too. But Pixar basically got Eisner's ass fired, and that's why they stayed.

Pixar and Miramax carried Disney financially and critically for YEARS.

Of course this is the most impressive announcment. I didn't say they were the most impressive titles so i'm not sure were you're getting that. Everyone already knew Disney and Fox are exclusive to blu-ray and that eventually all of their movies will make there way to blu-ray (for now). So how is that even news? A studio going exclusive to one hd format is much bigger news that what movies are going to come out that year from a studio everyone already knew was exclusive.

You don't read much around here then and on AVS and forum.hd-dvd.com

CES 2007 was bound to be the stage that Disney, Fox and at least Lionsgate would announce format neutrality.

I don't think anyone was expecting Weinstein to as their split from BV was not friendly.
